What Will The Home Of The Future Look Like?

Our homes tell us a lot about the era, culture and needs of the people of any given period or nation.
In the past, we used to build homes primarily for shelter, warmth and survival. Eventually, houses started expanding to incorporate different functions like dining or sleeping. Fast-forward to the discovery of electricity and the eventual mass production of homes post the Industrial Revolution, and you’ll see how we ended up with our modern homes.
However, with the advent of 5G internet, IoT-enabled devices, and modern conveniences and innovations, we are witnessing the transition to a new kind of residence: the smart home.
Our hyperconnectivity and reliance on digital technologies have spilled over into our homes, and are set to forever change how we live.
Smart and connected
‘Smart’ as a term might have become somewhat cliche today, thanks to heavy marketing efforts, but it is right on the mark: the future home will indeed be ‘smart’.
Imagine a reality where your smart watch detects that you are awake, notifying your home’s AI-powered central hub, which sets multiple processes into motion: it switches on your water heater so that you can shower in no time, it signals your coffee maker to prepare a fresh brew, turns on the heating or air conditioning in the rooms outside your bedroom, while checking your fridge to check for any low stock ingredients and orders new ones.
The possibilities are endless, marking a new way of living that champions convenience and efficiency—ideal for the 21st century.
Sustainable and energy-efficient
Today, we are already moving away from fossil fuels and environmentally harmful practices. The future will amplify these efforts, and our living abodes will adopt sustainability and green best practices.
Energy-efficient appliances, solar panels, and advanced insulation materials are simply the start of this transition in the homes of the future.
Future homes will utilize cutting-edge processes like greywater recycling systems, where water from non-toilet plumbing systems such as hand basins, washing machines, showers, and baths is treated and disinfected, then reused in other parts of the house, like toilets, laundry, or gardening.
We will come to see more green roofs and vertical gardens installed, as ways to reduce our carbon footprint and improve biodiversity.
Smart systems will continuously alter heating and cooling across the home to minimize usage and spending while optimizing comfort.

Adaptable spaces
As homes continue to shrink in size, developers are looking for ways to enable flexible living. One of the main ways to achieve this is with modular rooms, living spaces that can be reconfigured for different purposes—such as transforming a living room into a home office or a guest bedroom.
Furniture and fixtures will be designed to move and adapt easily, accommodating various activities throughout the day.
A new level of security
Just as the smart central home system will optimize your living experience, it will do the same for your security. In tandem with advanced devices, like facial recognition devices and fingerprint scanners, your AI-powered central home system will ensure you are protected in your home and will alert the authorities when you’re in danger.
A life well-lived
Wellness is increasingly on everybody’s mind, and future homes will reflect this trend.
Advanced air purification systems, circadian lighting, and spaces designed to reduce stress will contribute to inhabitants’ overall well-being. Meanwhile, we can expect to see smart mirrors that provide real-time health data and suggest fitness routines, linked to our smartwatches and other trackers.
A comfy, efficient life
To reiterate, homes reflect the era, culture, and needs of the people of any given period or nation. Our future homes will reflect a people who prioritize comfort, efficiency, sustainability, and convenience above all else.

As we move towards smart homes, it's essential to consider how these innovations not only enhance convenience but also adapt to our unique environments. Absolutely, our new homes must be designed to withstand the challenges of our hot desert climate, especially with climate change and rising summer temperatures. For instance, I currently struggle with heat in my rooms; even with the air conditioner running, it takes three to four hours for the temperature to adjust, increasing the load on the AC and requiring more maintenance in summer. Additionally, the water gets so hot that I hesitate to enter the bathroom at noon. Designing homes that effectively manage these conditions is crucial for comfort and sustainability while integrating technology to truly improve our living conditions.
