What is Heroic Public Speaking?

I’ve recently returned from Heroic Public Speaking (HPS) in Philadelphia, PA. Many people have asked what this event is all about and its vision. HPS was founded by Amy and Michael Port and it’s an organization that is designed with the specific goal of having speakers “change the world, one speech at a time”. Their mantra is “Yes, and!”

They believe that as a speaker you have the opportunity to create massive impact on others with your stories and your vision. I of course agree!

It’s been an amazing journey to become a member of this wonderful organization. Here are three takeaways I’ve learned during the HPS Journey and specifically while attending the conference.

  1. Be yourself. This may seem obvious to most, but for the speakers that are reading this, it’s an important reminder. We have to be our authentic true selves or we can’t reach the vision of “change the world, one speech at a time.”
  2. Be a performer, not a critic. As Teddy Roosevelt once said, “It”s not the critic that counts, but the man in the arena”. Focus on performing for your audience instead of telling them everything that is wrong. If you are a business leader I believe this can be applied to culture and your workforce as well.
  3. If you want to climb the ladder of success, help others aren’t as far up the ladder. It’s all about giving to the community. Be a mentor. Do whatever it takes to see everyone succeed; after all the giving is the getting!

My life is changed forever as a result of my experience at HPS. I’m eternally grateful for my good friend David for inviting me, driving me and coaching me along the way to and fro from Philly. Additionally, I’m grateful for Michael and Amy Port for what they’ve assembled and their vision for the world.

Do you want to know more about my experience at HPS and how I can apply this same type of mindset to your company or team? Whether it’s more engagement, higher sales, or better employee retention the HPS model can light A Radical Vision under your team I believe.

Send me an email at [email protected] and we can set up a time to chat 1 on 1 and I’ll include a PDF download of my book “Sometimes it does take a Brain Surgeon” to share with your team. Or, if you prefer to just sign up and receive my latest content click here.

I’d also welcome your comments below on anyone’s struggles to be a performer and not a critic to others.
