What is Hemp?

What is Hemp?

What is Hemp??Hemp, or industrial hemp, typically found in the northern hemisphere, is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. It is one of the fastest growing plants and was one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber. According to the?US Farm Act of 2018:?Industrial hemp is the non-psychoactive, low-THC, genetically distinct varieties of the plant?Cannabis sativa. Hemp has absolutely no use as a recreational drug. Section 7606 of the Farm Bill defines industrial hemp as “the plant?Cannabis sativa L.?and any part of such plant, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.”

Hemp is identified by funny sounding names like Cherry Wine, Bubblegum Trump, or Super Sour Tsunami. These funny names correlate to a particular linage or ancestry of hemp, also known as strain.??Each strain has certain characteristic that is unique to that funny named strain. These characteristics are specifically adapted to environments, weight, size, and emphasis of cannabinoids specific to particular strains.

Why Hemp?

Hemp Uses:?Over time, the use of industrial?hemp?has evolved into an even greater variety of products, including health foods, organic body care, clothing, construction materials, biofuels, plastic composites and Seeds, Fiber, Shivs. Animal Care, Textiles, Automotive, Furniture, Food & Beverages, Paper, Construction Materials, and more (according to one source, more than 25,000 products can be made from?hemp)?www.forbes.com

Environmental?Impact:?Hemp?offers many different uses that can promote a more sustainable world.?Hemp?products can be recycled, reused and are 100% biodegradable. Proponents of?hemp?claim that it can help reduce global warming because it takes out large amounts of carbon dioxide per acre, more than most plants.?Hemp is the quintessential #ESG crop. The phrase goes "what is above so is below." If the plant is 10 feet tall the tap root is 15 feet deep. This is significant as the Hemp plant drives carbon AKA plant and microbial food deep in the soil. Hemp has proven itself to be he most proficient #carbonsequestration mechanism in #agriculture.

#Hemp is the Future of #bioplastics ?

Plastic has long been recognised as the world’s most adaptable material.?

However, plastic also has a significant detrimental impact on the environment. Most plastics currently being produced are made using petroleum-based compounds that release harmful gases into the atmosphere.

In addition, the various methods for disposing of plastic waste are inefficient and harmful to the environment because they produce by-products that are toxic for the land, water and the world’s human population and wildlife.?

Hemp bioplastics can deliver most of what traditional plastics can provide without the negative greenhouse gases and damaging environmental impact. Hemp is stronger, sustainable and biodegradable and can now be produced at a similar cost to traditional plastics.?

Hemp plastic is the only bioplastic that is truly 100% biodegradable in nature. It grows in 3-4 months to maturity compared with ~15 years for trees and it absorbs four (4) times the carbon dioxide of trees and other plants from the atmosphere.

This summary below explains the numerous benefits of using hemp for the manufacturing of biodegradable plastic rather than conventional petroleum-based plastics.?

#Medical Benefits:?Hemp has a property called cannabinoids. There are many cannabinoids including Cannabidiol or CBD. These amazing properties are showing many promising health benefits.?

What is (CBD)?Cannabidiol (CBD)?is a naturally occurring compound found in the resinous flower of?cannabis, a plant with a rich?history?as a medicine going back thousands of years. Today the therapeutic properties of?CBD?are being tested and confirmed by scientists and doctors around the world. A?safe, non-addictive substance,?CBD?is one of more than a hundred “phytocannabinoids,” which are unique to cannabis and endow the plant with its robust therapeutic profile. CBD?is closely related to another important medicinally active phytocannabinoid:?tetrahydrocannabinol?(THC), the compound that causes the high that cannabis is famous for. These are the two components of cannabis that have been most studied by scientists. Both?#CBD?and?THC?have?significant therapeutic attributes. But unlike?THC,?CBD?does not make a person feel “stoned” or intoxicated. That’s because?CBD?and?THC?act in different ways on different receptors in the brain and body.

CBD?can actually lessen or neutralize the psychoactive effects of?THC, depending on how much of each compound is consumed. Many people want the health benefits of cannabis without the high – or with less of a high. The fact that?CBD?is therapeutically potent as well as non-intoxicating, and easy to take as a?CBD?oil, makes it an appealing treatment option for those who are cautious about trying cannabis for the first time.

Vocabulary:?

BIOMASS:?Dried hemp plant materials including the stalks and leaves that may include flowers/buds and/or seeds that have been harvested. Free of mold, grit, minimal (< 0.1%) non-hemp organic matter, and at least 80% dry. Industry-wide acceptable moisture content is necessary to establish uniform pricing for hemp biomass. Any hemp biomass material that is above the standard moisture content will result in decreased value and an adjusted sale price to reflect a lower volume of the end product to account for further water evaporation. Biomass can also be milled, ground or pressed into pellets.?

DRIED CBD FLOWER:?Dry flower is the dried flower and bud fraction of a hemp plant that has been removed from the stalks and contains minimal stems. Flower is suitable for smoking and for use in pre-rolled joints.?

CBD SEEDS (Non-Feminized):?Hemp plants that are pollinated naturally or with traditional breeding techniques produce both male or female seeds. These are known as regular, or non- feminized, seeds and generally result in an even split between the two sexes.?

CBD SEEDS (Feminized):?Feminized seeds are seeds that have been modified to produce almost 100% female plants. There are a few techniques that can produce reliably feminized seeds. Feminized hemp seeds can be genetically modified to produce only female plants by eliminating the X chromosome. A non-genetic technique is to stress a healthy female plant by interrupting its light cycle during flowering. Another common and controlled method is to spray female plants with colloidal silver or silver thiosulphate solution.?

CRUDE HEMP OIL:?Crude hemp oil is extracted from the hemp plant and contains all of the cannabinoids, terpenes and other plant compounds found in the biomass. Processors use a number of different methods to extract crude oil from hemp. Supercritical CO2 extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2) to pull CBD (and other phytochemicals) from the plant. Solvent extraction uses ethanol or hydrocarbons, such as butane or propane, to process hemp biomass into crude oil. Other processes use olive oil or water as a solvent. Crude hemp oil is often “winterized.” Crude oil is winterized to remove organic plant compounds, such as lipids, waxes and chlorophyll, that increases the potency of the oil and creates a more transparent distillate.?

REFINED HEMP OIL:?Crude hemp oil is further refined through distillation to produce refined hemp oil, which includes full spectrum oil and broad-spectrum oil. CBD full spectrum oil distillate is refined hemp oil extract that contains all the compounds found naturally occurring in the plant, including all the cannabinoids, terpenes and essential oils. CBD broad spectrum oil distillate is refined hemp oil extract that includes all the compounds found naturally in the plant, except broad spectrum oil has been processed to remove all or substantially all of the THC.?

CBD ISOLATE:?CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD, which is produced by removing all other compounds found in the plant including terpene, flavonoids, plant parts and other cannabinoids. CBD isolate comes in a granular or powder form and is odorless and tasteless. The end product contains 0% THC and is made up of 96% to 99.9% CBD.?
