What the Hell Are You Doing? Knowing How To Answer This Will Change Everything

What the hell am I doing?!?!

Why the hell did I do that?!?!

Why the hell didn’t I do that?!?!

I’m sick and tired of asking myself that question.

You too?

It can be about little things (and little things add up).

More often and most importantly, it’s the big questions about life.

Health: What the hell am I doing (bad) or not doing (healthy)?

Work: What the hell am I doing (procrastinating, poor habits, getting pissed off)?

Career: What the hell am I doing (being stuck in a job I hate)?

Relationships: What the hell am I doing or not doing that’s making it not work?

The super mega questions (and answers)

Then there is the big "What the hell am I doing?" query.

"What am I doing with my life?"

Followed by "Now what?"

Here's the funny (or not-so-funny thing).

We always ask these questions, but we never stop to answer them.

Or if we do, we think, "Yeah, I gotta figure that out."

When this happens, SOUND THE ALARM

Saying, “I gotta figure it out,” means you’re just kicking it down the road.

Face it, you’re probably not going to REALLY stop and think about it.

You’re not going to Tibet to sit on a rock and figure it out.

Face it, like most people, you’re not going to find the time, keep it in mind or make an intention to do it.

The solution The next time you ask yourself, “What the hell am I doing?” sound the alarm, pause, and realize YOU NEED TO ANSWER IT.

Next time, think, "OK, I will schedule some time to address this.”

“I am going to understand what I am doing, why I am doing it, why I need or want it to be otherwise, and then I am going to move forward to change, modify and better it." Shining a light on it and making an intention to put your attention on it are huge.

Because where attention goes, focus flows followed by realizations, answers, and action.

Take the time, even 15 minutes in your day, to shut everything out and start thinking about it. Talk with others and yes, even talk out loud to yourself about it.

You will start thinking, cogitating, and ruminating without even trying.

When (and if) you do this regularly (daily), you will build new neural pathways in your brain, and the reticular activating system in your prefrontal cortex will help you look for and notice insights, ideas, and solutions.

Then you will get excited. You will get into it.

Then, you will get into action mode.

It works for others and it worked for me…BIG TIME

I succeeded in transforming my life by New Way Forward because I answered the question, “Why the hell am I doing what I don’t want to do anymore?”

Followed by the question, “OK Paul, so what the hell do you want and need to do?”

I did this because I kept hearing directly and indirectly from so many other people who successfully went from “What the hell am I doing?” to “Ahhhhh. This is what the hell I’m doing.”

Find a trigger and pull it

Maybe, just maybe, I have planted a trigger in your consciousness.

A trigger to move forward to get an answer and a solution.

Next time you ask yourself, “What the hell…?” catch yourself.

Wake up! Pause and make a promise that “I am going to answer this.”

Then pause and decide how.

“I’m going to start right now, or I am going to take 15 minutes today to start thinking about it and not stop until I figure it out.”

Challenge yourself and be kind to yourself.

Consider why you’re asking the question. What’s making you say, “What the hell…?”

Then, go very basic and determine the essence of what and how you want things to be versus what they currently are.

The answer could come to you instantly or it may take a while.

Either way, it’s worth it. You will immediately feel better and you will find the answer.

You are ending the daily water tortuous drip, drip, drip of being unhappy, dissatisfied, and hating yourself for not doing anything about it.

A return on your investment

You will be swept away once you get going.

You get past the why to the what and how.

You will get excited.

These can be hard questions to answer.

But answering “What am I doing?” is a gift to your life from yourself.

Now, that's what the hell you’re doing.

High school student: usually a model student, Class: Chemistry 101 Teacher: "Old man" with a thick accent. Classroom: numerous shapes made with colored ping pong balls: labelled "molecular structures" and foreign formulas on the chalk board. Decision: This class is not for me, but no alternatives available What the Hell? From my seat, I crocheted a king size bed cover. The process: The teacher & I didn't bother each other. Result: I earned my first and only D-. Next Step: Annual School Counselor meeting Humiliated by my choice in chemistry class Counselor replied with grace 'At the time, you did what I thought was best for you. Move On.' This is my answer to What the Hell?" which I have shared with hundreds of my own students and I repeat to myself often.

Paul Long What am I doing--working on my personal mastery and wellbeing first--creating foundation with family and my kinship circle to sturdy up my belonging and support, connecting with my community beyond online.--caring about where I live and how I impact that aspect of life's support, meaningful work and contribution flow much more in sync if I do all prior commitments (self., family, kinship, community), and then there is the greater good or social impact--how can I find the time and focus to care for others beyond d my circle--this makes me happy!
