Myths About Web 3.0

So, before we debunk some of the rumors and myths about Web 3.0, let's make sure we're all on the same page about what it actually is.

What Is Web 3.0?

To break down Web 3.0 in a way that makes sense, let's take a quick trip through its older siblings, Web 1.0 and Web 2.0

Web Evolution

Well, it all began when someone had the idea that libraries weren't cutting it for sharing information. I kind of agree. Even back in the '90s, people were glued to their phones and computers. Just like books in a library, the early Internet was made to pass on information to those who wanted it. But "designed" might not be the right word here because it was more like a limitation than a plan.

There wasn't no way for users to interact with the information they were seeing; they could only read it and hope that what they needed would be in the next update. Now that I think about it, the only thing the first version of the web had going for it over a regular library was that it was easier to access information. But then the second version of the web came along and changed everything.

Of course, it's not rocket science to figure out that Web 2 was all about adding the interactive stuff that Web 1 didn't have. That's why people often call Web 2 the "Social Web." But here's where things get cool. What we have now, what most of us use on our phones and laptops, is Web 2.

Do you know social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter (now called "X")? They're all considered Web 2. The internet is still in its early stages, and it's mind-blowing to think about how much further it can go.

Okay, let's pause for a sec and recap what we've been talking about in this section.

  • Web 1.0 was all about the producers,?
  • Web 2.0 is all about the consumers.

Okay, so here's the thing. I want you to think about this: what are the limits of Web 2.0 that might have led to the creation of Web 3.0? I mean, if everything's running smoothly, why bother changing it, right?

Have you thought of anything yet or not? Okay, fine. I'll tell you something about the web versions. It's important to understand the limitations of Web 2.0 to really appreciate Web 3.0 and everything that comes with it. Only then will Web 3.0 make sense. Let's look at the key limitations of Web 2.0

Major Limitations of Web 2.0

1. Centralization:

So, here's the thing: one of the biggest problems with Web 2.0 is that it's supposed to be all about the consumers, but it's not really working out that way. And don't forget, the whole idea behind the internet was to give everyone freedom without any limits.

So, yeah, with great power comes great responsibility. I mean, that's like a famous quote or something. Anyways, it was pretty much a given that some folks would take advantage of this whole freedom of information thing. But that's not really the point I'm trying to make, so I'm gonna wrap this up here.

Let's go back to the centralization, shall we? Web 2.0 was supposed to be all about giving power to the people and letting them do their own thing. But if you look around, you'll see that's not really what happened. Instead, we've got a bunch of big companies controlling most of the internet traffic and data. Now, you might be thinking, "What does that have to do with me?" Well, just think about the privacy risks and censorship that can come with that kind of control.

Talking about privacy, let’s jump to next point?

2. Privacy Concerns:

You know that weird thing where you're chatting with a buddy about something you're into, and then, like, as soon as you hop online, you start seeing ads for that exact thing? Well, it's not a coincidence. Your devices are basically spying on you—or, more accurately, the companies that make them are.

Privacy concerns

You know what reminds me of a hilarious joke I saw on X the other day… This guy was so confused about why the calculator app was asking for microphone access. Like, bro, is it trying to calculate in stereo or something? Haha! But on a more serious note, if you dig into court records, you'll find that big-shot institutions have been slapped with sanctions and fines over and over again for misusing data and messing with people's privacy. It's wild!

So, you've probably noticed those annoying ads that follow you around the internet. Ever wondered how they know so much about you? Well, let me tell you, it's not magic. Companies and institutions are leaking your data like crazy. I could go on and on about it, but I don't want to come across as a conspiracy theorist or anything.

Let’s take one more limitation of Web 2.0.

3. Scalability Issues:

If you're not a total tech geek, you might not know this, but Web 2.0 is having some serious growing pains. Get this: as of October 2023, there were like 5.3 billion people using the internet, and it just keeps on going up. Just imagine how hard the internet infrastructure we built way back in the 2000s is working to keep up with everyone's needs. It's like, seriously struggling to keep up, you know?

You know how technology has been on a wild ride these past few years? Well, brace yourself 'cause it's about to get even crazier. Web 2.0, the tech we've been using, is starting to show its limits. It's like an old car that can't keep up with the latest gadgets. Web 3.0 is the new kid on the block, and it's way smarter and efficient. It's like comparing a flip phone to a smartphone. Web 3.0 is like the smartphone of the internet, with all the bells and whistles you can imagine.

Also, the way data is shared and works together across different services and platforms on the web these days is pretty bad.

You're probably thinking, "Hold up, the internet isn't as flawless as it seems?" But hear me out. We're still in the early stages of the internet's journey, and guess what? There's already an upgrade waiting in the wings—web 3.0!

So, if you're with me on the idea that Web 3.0 was created to fix the problems of Web 2.0, and you already know what those problems are, here's a question for you...

So, what's this "Web 3" thing all about? And how does it fix the problems we've been talking about?
