From David Baumann : In households charged more than ten fees in the past year, 51% still had credit available on a credit card. “Our research finds that American families are paying fees they do not expect, even when they have access to cheaper forms of credit,” CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said, in releasing the report.
Either the people who were "surprised" by overdraft fees (after 10 or more overdrafts?!) need to seek assistance to keep better track of their budgeting and spending, or they just started banking yesterday.
If they had less expensive forms of credit, they should have used it. People who overdraft are receiving a service - a loan essentially without the credit check. Banking is not only a commodity, but with stupid statements like this by the Washington elite, an increasingly devalued commodity.
