What the heck is "ArcticDB"? (And what you need to know about ChatGPT's new API)

OpenAi has pulled the dust covers off its eagerly awaited API which lets businesses integrate ChatGPT into their applications. Instacart and Snapchat were among early adopters of the uncannily powerful if frequently inaccurate AI chatbot. The company has tweaked its terms and conditions, revealed prices and is also letting enterprise customers run dedicated instances instead of sharing Azure capacity with everyone else. Here's what we know (lovingly illustrated with a still from the not-menacing-at-all Ex_Machina, which is a fine film, if you haven't seen it...) For those seriously considering making some API calls but worried about ChatGPT's deeply inconsistent levels of uptime, OpenAI says it is working on that as a priority...

There's far too many open source databases in the world, you would be forgiven for thinking wearily; do we really need one more? Well yes, say Bloomberg and large investment management firm Man Group. They're teaming up in a unique open source agreement to build out and open-source "ArcticDB", which will be used not just by Man's quants but Bloomberg's enterprise customers, as it will underpin the latter's BQuant interactive analytics platform. The need for the project stems from the extraordinary firehose of evolving data market actors face. We pushed some questions to Man's CTO. Here's what he told us...

The Stack was recently lucky enough to join a capacity crowd at Manchester United's home Old Trafford. The team came away with a big win. We think coach Erik Ten Hag's impressive turnaround and management skills deserve a close look by CIOs and other IT leaders too. Really. Our key takeaways.

Think you have your cloud security under control? This case study of a sophisticated recent attack may have you poring over some finer details of your controls. Sysdig saw a threat actor pivot from compromised Kubernetes container to AWS environment, pulling IAM credentials from Terraform and generally pivoting fluidly and effectively through a complex environment to steal data and critical IP. It's well worth a read.

On the security note, just because remote staff are using a VPN with MFA doesn't, unfortunately, make you safe from trouble as LastPass has found out. The password manager's vaults have been pillaged and one reason is a DevOps engineer logging in from home on an unpatched machine on which a motivated adversary had dropped a keylogger...

All that and a whole host more on our homepage. Swing by.

Our Stack X event meanwhile is now at capacity which is exciting. We're looking forward to seeing those who have signed up for an evening of conversation about innovating with customer data as well as a hands-on ransomware incident response tabletop exercise this coming Tuesday. Get in touch if you are interested in our future events and would either like to attend or sponsor one.
