What have you learned today?
Lifelong learning has been the cornerstone of my professional journey, and I proudly identify as a lifelong learner. But what does this term truly entail? In moments of doubt about the essence of such concepts, I find solace in the wisdom of philosophical titans like Socrates. He believed that while humans are inherently imperfect, they possess the unique capacity to evolve towards perfection.
Yet, the pursuit of perfection can be a double-edged sword. It’s the continuous improvement in our endeavors, the art of honing a skill or competence, that truly resonates with me. To become a lifelong learner and, by extension, a master in your field, one must embrace metacognition—the art of understanding one’s own thought process and learning how to learn.
An article from Headspring provides six top tips for successful cognitive thinking in the workplace.?For those eager to delve deeper, there’s also a comprehensive report on metacognition, replete with associated neuroscience insights.
Lastly, I cannot recommend enough the documentary “Jiro Dreams of Sushi,” which captures the quintessence of a lifelong learner.?The film chronicles the life of Jiro Ono, an 85-year-old sushi maestro and proprietor of the erstwhile Michelin three-starred Sukiyabashi Jiro. It’s a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence and the mastery of one’s craft.
