What has The Ferret been up to in March?

As March draws to a close and Easter weekend arrives (along with the long-awaited chocolate), it’s the perfect moment to look at what The Ferret has been up to in these past few weeks.?

Earlier this month, it was great to meet many of you face-to-face at our AGM, held at Glasgow’s KINNING PARK COMPLEX SCIO . Together, we examined the impact our journalism has made over the past year and discussed major new projects for 2024. There’s been much happening at The Ferret so continue reading to find out more.

Our podcast was nominated for an(other) award ??

We're excited to announce that our podcast, Sheku Bayoh: The Inquiry, has been selected as one of the finalists for this year's Amnesty Media Awards. A big congratulations to the team behind the podcast: Karin Goodwin , Halina Rifai , and Tomiwa Folorunso !?

This is their second award nomination following the British Journalism Awards.

Our journalism shed light on an underreported issue

For many years, The Ferret has been one of the few media outlets to report on the dangers of snares, which often catch non-target species such as dogs, deer, cats and badgers.

On 21 March, the Scottish Parliament passed the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Bill, which will make it an offence to use a snare to trap a wild animal.?

We opened our newsroom doors… and shared the results

In February, The Ferret and Greater Govanhill Magazine hosted our inaugural Open House at our Community Newsroom in Glasgow. This regular event welcomes locals, professionals, and people with lived experience to contribute their perspectives on the stories overlooked by the media, with each session exploring a different theme.

For our first Open House, we focused on housing, gathering insights into the housing crisis and developing ideas for more comprehensive reporting on the issue. You can read more about our conversations here.

Our investigations inspired further reporting

Our far right probes have been cited by The Times and Hope Not Hate’s State of Hate Report 2024. They referenced our report on a? Scottish far right figure who was recruiting neo-Nazis. You can read it here.

We shared our expertise

Our team has been working across Scotland and beyond this month, sharing their expertise both online and in person. We have delivered presentations, spoken at conferences, and held workshops for a variety of organisations, from charities to other media outlets.
