What has Body Intelligence & Physical Intelligence to do with Excellent Leadership?

In my latest article here on LinkedIn, "EQ goes beyond IQ in Exceptional Leadership," I elaborated on the importance of EQ in outstanding Leadership. Based on the article, a former student of mine from the SBS Swiss Business School asked me a great question, and I quote:?

"As always - thanks for the article! Someone once told me that for an exceptional leader they must have a well balanced and developed IQ, EQ, BQ and PQ (..behaviour and persuasion matters too). Each and all can be well-adapted or maladapted based on self-development. Let me know what you think of this."

Thank you, Simoné. You invited me to write this article on the importance of Body Intelligence and Physical Intelligence in Leadership.

DEFINING BODY INTELLIGENCE AND PHYSICAL INTELLIGENCE

Body Intelligence (BQ) and Physical Intelligence (PQ, or better PI) are terms often used interchangeably and refer to similar concepts. Both emphasize the importance of understanding and utilizing one's physical body in various contexts.?

In this article, we will look at them from a leadership perspective.?

BODY INTELLIGENCE IN LEADERSHIP

In leadership, Body Intelligence (BQ) refers to the ability to understand and effectively use one's body and physical presence to interact with employees (and other stakeholders), and BQ manifests in the following ways:

Non-Verbal Communication

Leaders with high BQ are adept at using body language, gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice to convey messages effectively. They understand how their physical presence influences others and use non-verbal cues to enhance communication, build rapport, and inspire trust.

Presence and Charisma

Leaders with strong BQ possess a commanding presence and exude charisma. They have a heightened awareness of how they carry themselves, project confidence, and create a positive impact on their followers. This presence helps them inspire and influence others, leading to greater engagement and motivation within the team.

Emotional Intelligence

BQ involves being attuned to one's own emotions and those of others. Leaders with high BQ can read non-verbal cues, understand emotional states, and respond empathetically. This emotional Intelligence allows leaders to connect with their team members, build strong relationships, and create a supportive work environment.?Read more about EQ in my "EQ goes beyond IQ in Exceptional Leadership" article.

Authenticity and Congruence?

Leaders with BQ are aware of the congruence between their verbal and non-verbal communication. They ensure that their body language aligns with their words, projecting authenticity and building trust. Consistency between words and actions strengthens their credibility and enables them to lead by example effectively. These leaders truly "walk the talk."

PHYSICAL INTELLIGENCE IN LEADERSHIP

Physical Intelligence (PI) refers to the overall understanding, awareness, and capabilities related to one's physical body. I call it the "The Physical-ME." In Leadership, high PI is essential and will contribute in the following important ways:

Stamina and Resilience?

Being an effective leader requires physical stamina to handle the demands and challenges of their roles. Leaders with high PI maintain good physical health, exercise regularly, and manage their energy levels effectively. This allows them to stay resilient, cope with stress, and sustain their performance over the long term.

Confidence and Energy

Leaders with high PI exude confidence and vitality. They maintain a healthy lifestyle, positively affecting their energy levels, enthusiasm, and overall demeanor. Importantly, their physical well-being contributes to their ability to inspire and motivate others.

Presence and Charisma

Physical Intelligence enhances a leader's physical presence and charisma. Leaders who are physically fit and well-coordinated naturally draw attention and inspire confidence. Their physical capabilities and poise enhance their overall impact as they interact with team members, stakeholders, and other leaders.

Role Modeling

Leaders with high PI are role models for their teams by prioritizing their physical well-being. They demonstrate the importance of self-care, healthy habits, and work-life balance. This fosters a culture of well-being within the organization and encourages team members to prioritize their own physical health.

TO SUMMARIZE

Body Intelligence and Physical Intelligence are valuable must-have assets for leaders. BQ enables leaders to communicate effectively, inspire trust, and build strong relationships, while PI contributes to confidence, vitality, and resilience.?

A leader's ability to learn and further integrate these qualities into his/her leadership approach, among, e.g., EQ and IQ, will enhance his/her impact as a leader, create positive work environments, and effectively guide his/her teams toward success.
