What Are the Happiest Countries Based on Social Media?
Happiness is often measured through surveys or indices, but what if we could gauge it from the way people communicate online? Using data from social media posts, including emoji usage, hashtags, and sentiment scores, we analyzed global happiness trends. This data-driven look at social media positivity shows which countries are happiest—and how they express it.
Importing the Data
To start, we gathered social media sentiment data from global sources, focusing on metrics such as emoji usage, hashtags, and sentiment analysis of posts. This data includes over 20 million posts from 10 countries, segmented by positivity and negativity percentages, along with sentiment scores. The dataset was imported into Pyramid Analytics, where we used its data preparation tools to clean and transform the data.
This seamless import process allowed us to quickly transform a unstructured dataset into a structured format ready for analysis.

Happiness Map
A Geo Map highlighting the average sentiment score by country. Larger bubbles represent higher positivity scores, making it easy to identify the happiest countries at a glance. The emojis are shown by color and reflect cultural nuances—Japan’s preference for ?? shows a reserved form of happiness, whereas Brazil’s ?? emphasizes warmth and affection.
Hashtag Trends
A word cloud of the most popular hashtags globally, such as #blessed, #happiness, and #joy. Common themes like gratitude and love dominate across countries, but regional hashtags like #feliz in Brazil and #arigato in Japan highlight localized expressions of happiness.

Positive vs. Negative Post Distribution
A stacked bar chart comparing the percentage of positive and negative posts for each country. While most countries show overwhelmingly positive posts (e.g., Brazil at 74% positivity), the U.K. has a slightly higher proportion of negative posts at 13%, reflecting a cultural tendency toward humor or critique.
