Is this what happens when you meditate?

My dear friend Vinay inspired me to do “basic” yoga and meditation the other day. Regularity is my problem. I will do it for a week but that would come to a gradual stop. He made me realize that keeping it basic and enjoyable will help form the habit which is more important than actually any benefit from the practice.

I have always wondered what happens when people meditate. People report many benefits - becoming calm and focused is a common occurrence. TBH calm and focused isn’t always the outcome for me. I am curious to know what different folks go through during meditation. Why some can sit for hours while It is hard for me to keep up with 15 mins / day regularly even if It feels nice.

Below is my account of recent restart of meditation. I would love your comments on how it works out for you.

I chant Om and meditate for 15 mins, paying attention to my breathing. Mind has mind of its own :) First few mins, it runs around and it is hard to concentrate. It seems every little task becomes urgent at this moment, past regrets and cringe moments come alive and future dreams drumbeat for immediate action. It is easy to sidetrack into a rabbit hole of thoughts after thoughts. But if I endure it all, slowly I come to a state in which I am not so embroiled with my thoughts. I am a bit detached. It is like I was part of a crowd and now I can look the crowd from a bird’s eye view. The advantage of this meditative state is that now I can choose to ignore the uncontrolled trains of thoughts and select what I want to think or observe.

Mind is calm and in control. I can take it wherever I want it to be. This stage feels nice. I still have other thoughts and urgent tasks hitting me but they seldom derail me. In this stage, mind is so focused and productive that it is possible to dissect tough hard to comprehend topics. It is generating solutions to questions I have, even if it is somewhat disconcerting to me how the answers are generated.

In starting no one can meditate more than 5 min., But by doing regular meditation one can increase his meditation time. In our mind so many un useful information stored, it's very difficult to release these information that's why meditation time is very short in the starting. My suggestion for you, before meditation you should listen any chanting or sankirtan. It would be better if you have any sidha guru because he can guide you in right direction. Please read "Autobiography of a Yogi" book of Paramhansa Yoganand... This book inspired so many people... Also you can find so many answer of yours.??? ?????? ????

I envy you Prady! I’ve been a bit unsuccessful with the traditional form of meditation. You could blame me for not trying it enough. Nonetheless I’ve realized that any activity that keeps your mind engrossed & focused and helps you de-stress in general could also be a form of meditation perhaps. For me, it’s been reading a good book or listening to music that I particularly enjoy or even playing the piano. Again it’s a different story that I don’t do these activities often enough.
