What Happened Now? A Cleveland Newsletter Issue 692: November 15, 2024

"What Happened Now?" is a lively roundup and analysis of the top stories of the day in Northeast Ohio from News 5's Joe Donatelli. It’s like getting the news from a friend who also wondered what this building is. Subscribe Here.

There is one darn TV station in town that truly follows through: And it’s your old pals at News 5. Back in 2018, investigator Scott Noll covered the tragic death of a teen who drowned in the custody of a Cleveland group home. The boy’s name was Shaud Howell. A state investigation found a group home worker dropped off Howell and two other teens at Edgewater Beach and left them unsupervised for hours. Howell’s body was recovered from Lake Erie two days later. The state allowed the home to remain open after administrators submitted plans to correct its violations. Following Howell’s death, Cuyahoga County stopped sending foster children to Quality Care Residential Homes. We’ve since learned the county is working with that group home again, which Howell’s family calls a slap in the face. Worse, the state has uncovered new abuses. Watch Noll’s report.

There were no reports of widespread voter fraud during the recent election in Ohio: Yet some Republican lawmakers want to make it even harder still to vote, reports the Ohio Capital Journal. I wonder at what point making it harder and harder to vote will bite Republicans. Apparently, we have yet to reach it.

If you’ve ever seen this building and wondered what it is, anchor Tessa DiTirro has an answer: You know the brightly colored wonder in the Waterloo Arts District on Waterloo Road? Here’s everything you need to know about the Pop Life Building.

It will not shock you to learn: The price of Christmas trees continues to rise. The average cost is expected to run between $70-$100. You can save money by buying an artificial tree or shopping outside of densely populated areas.

Remember the local state rep who was accused of stalking a fellow lawmaker as well as abusive behavior at the statehouse? “Embattled Ohio Rep. Elliot Forhan sued some of his colleagues Wednesday night, accusing both Democratic and Republican state lawmakers of performing a ‘political hit job’ that led to him losing his elected seat, a teaching position and a client at his law firm,” reports Cleveland.com.

Such a great idea: “From swords into plowshares,” this Ohio pastor is turning guns into garden tools, reports Ideastream.

Sports reporter Camryn Justice called him the coolest kid she’s ever met: He might just be the coolest 10–year-old ever. Check out Bay Village BMXer Huck Kurinsky. (Yes, he even has a cool name.)
