What happened to the Keys in the Pitch?
Our greatest positive feedback on PitchScan? has been on its ability to measure and quantify areas that crack on a Cricket pitch.
It's images like the cover image above, where as a company we saw a clear opportunity to provide the viewers at home with more detailed information that they demand. Plus it gives the commentators the unique ability to really give the viewer at home a better experience than those at the Stadium.
Our cameras provide a variety of information and data points that enable us to combine an image of the pitch with a detailed set of data points like the image below.
Where it got really interesting was after the 36deg, the day after. The crack width 'grew' almost three times its size in one day to be an average 18.5mm.
The length of the crack is slightly misleading in the below graphic as it was just over 6m in length running down just outside off stump and then overnight it's suddenly over 10m. What happened in this case was a corresponding crack well outside legside (Prindiville End) joined the middle crack, so in actual fact the crack 'grew' around 30cm due to the heat.
What does this mean? Well for us we think the above graphics provide a far better opportunity for the Broadcaster to convey information than previously and the biggest upside is with our maps this can be used in play to determine where bowlers should be bowling and potentially high performance elements should teams choose to use this information.
Interested in all feedback on this article and I look forward to providing some interesting quirks that came out of our data from the Bellerive Test!
