MIT: Where Now?
John Deutch becomes a Skoltech Trustee
In October 2012, John Deutch was appointed as a Trustee of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology.
Jane Mayer's 2016 book "Dark Money" is a scathing, sickening expose of David Koch's campaign to influence politics to support his coal empire. About this article
In addition to telling the narrative of what happened at MIT over the past decade, I will be using LinkedIn as a central tool in my communication strategy. Instead of writing a report, or a newspaper article, I will be using LinkedIn articles to build something similar to a website, with pages and links representing different pieces of the story, and a homepage that pulls all the pieces together. For that reason, many pages will serve as a placeholders, introducing the topic and presenting some basic pieces. This will give me the urls I need.
This is a scary story. It is about MIT's reckless partnership with Russia and Vladimir Putin to develop Russian shale. A dozen leading universities turned down the deal before MIT signed in late 2011, because only a reckless person would commit to a ten year partnership with Russia developing fossil fuel research. Two Schlumberger directors — John Deutch and Rafael Reif — brought the deal to MIT, and after two years of resistance and difficult negotiations, managed to convince MIT to sign the agreement with Russia. Susan Hockfield resigned because of this deal and the MIT Corporation inserted Rafael reif as president to execute it. With Reif as president, every single piece of MIT changed.
I've spent the past four years trying to understand what happened, and that is the narrative I am trying to unfold here. In effect, with these articles, I am trying to tell the story in real time. Hopefully, when you have all the pieces, you'll see why this story matters.
