In June, 1995, I was living in South Korea. The collapse of the Sampoong Department Store was the third of a series of urban disasters, and it inspired me to write this poem, which was published in the Korea Times and the Korea Herald.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT?
??On both sides of the DMZ,
The soldiers clean their guns.
The morning′s calm, a peaceful day.
Death comes by other means.
??We learned to rule machines,
But we forgot to rule ourselves.
The bigwigs say they will set things right,
Who knows what they will miss?
??The people hope that they will live,
And think about their friends.
They bolt their windows, lock the door.
Death comes by other means.
??When will it end, the people shout,
To the men who are accused.
The bigwigs now are quite contrite,
They say it won't repeat.
??The people hope they won't be next,
As they sit and watch TV.
The engineers explain it all,
Death comes by other means.
