What Is a Hackathon?

A hackathon, a word combination of "hack" and "marathon," is an intense period of collaborative work, typically lasting 24-48 hours. Here individuals and teams come together to solve problems, build projects, or innovate on existing technologies.

While traditionally associated with software development, hackathons have expanded to encompass various fields, including telecommunications, artificial intelligence, big data, etc.

Why Should Telecom Professionals Care About Hackathons?

1. Solutions for Businesses: Hackathons create a culture of innovation, providing a platform for telecom(unication) professionals to experiment with brand new technologies like 5G, IoT, AI, and cloud computing. The companies bring their technologies, use-cases and problems so that participants can solve them in order to get a reward.
2. Skills: By working on intense projects under time constraints, participants refine their technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork. Furthermore, they experiment with new technologies and increase their Techstack.
3. Career: Participation in hackathons demonstrates a passion for innovation, technical proficiency, and the ability to collaborate effectively, which can significantly boost career prospects.

My Experience at Junction 2023 and 2024

As someone who has a small record of attending Hackathons like Junction 2023 and 2024, I can attest to the energy and creativity that surrounds these events. The range of projects, from AI-powered optimization tools to innovative IoT applications, showcases the immense potential of hackathons to drive industry advancements. Businesses come with real problems to find solutions and acquire highly skilled people. That adds to the spice.

Junction as the biggest Hackathon in Europe has a special atmosphere. I love being there with innovative people that enjoy solving and creating and knowing about our field of work. At Junction's venue participants only need to bring their laptop and good mood. For drinks, food, competition, nice people is cared by the organizers. Even sleep/resting places where available this year. Last year, we developed straight for almost 48hrs. This year, I prioritized my sleep ??

It was, as always, a fun experience and worth the journey. + Visiting Helsinki adds to the beauty. (Next year, I want to visit Junction 2025 again.)

How to Get Involved in a Hackathon

1. Find a Hackathon: Research! For example Junction hosts various Hackathons around the globe. The next one in January in the The Hague. Apply now!
2. Form a Team: Bring a team of friends with complementary skills. If you don't have a team, it's okay. There are always people looking to join. ??
3. Brainstorm Ideas: Identify the solution for a challenge or project that excites you.
4. Plan and Execute: Develop a clear project plan and allocate tasks efficiently.
5. Learn and Iterate: Embrace the learning process and be open to feedback. I haven't "won" in the first 3 Hackathons. For me it is not about winning. I want to see who is better and learn from them. The question always remains, what did others do differently that I can include next time ??
