As we get through the first two weeks of the new year, many of us have already let go of our New Year's Resolutions, whether life happened and "forced" us to miss out on our first day at the gym or we went out partying with friends so we cheated on no drinking, poor eating or whatever it may be....truly accomplishing our goals is really hard. Achievement takes consistent, deliberate, intentional ACTION over and over again. What actions are you taking to truly take control and achieve your goals?
The first question is why do you want them? How badly do you want to achieve these goals? What can you do to take the necessity to achieve this goal to a 10/10? What will it feel like when you achieve it? Can you see that target clearly in your mind? If so, you're off to a GREAT START. Find small ways to reward yourself and know that it takes one step at a time to get to your goals. It's really easy to get defeated, appreciate the small victories.
Once we have our vision clear we can start mapping out the actions that we need to take to get there. Maybe the action is small, maybe not, but start to think about ways you could chunk that action into smaller steps and please please please, WRITE THEM DOWN! It's really easy to think through things in your head, but just having it in your head, isn't enough to get anything done. (Trust me, I know too well)
Once you have the steps you need to take to get there, now you need to get in the HABIT of doing it. Our life is built by the habits and patterns we leverage daily to define the ACTIONS that we take. Studies show that potentially 45% of our actions are habitual. Most of those habits have NOT been consciously developed, they have just happened to us along the way. This leaves a massive opportunity for us to consciously create the habits we want and with some repetition we can easily start to rewire our brain to create positive habits that align with our goals.
It's a simple process, but takes ACTION:
- Define the result you want, get very clear on the details of What you want, When you want it, What it will feel like and What it means to you to achieve the result
- Create an action plan with step by step detail on what needs to happen and How you will get there.
- Find some way to hold yourself (or have someone else) hold you accountable. Set check-ins with yourself, reminders on your phone/calendar to support you.
- Challenge yourself to do this habit as frequently as you can - in a perfect world, daily for 60 days or more to truly lock it in
- Check in, measure, test, iterate.
