Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are atmospheric gases trapped by the sun's heat, keeping the Earth warm enough to support life. Without these gases, our planet would be too cold for most life forms. What Are Greenhouse Gases?
Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation, creating the greenhouse effect. The primary greenhouse gases include:
Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is produced by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas), deforestation, and various industrial processes and will remain in the atmosphere for thousands of years. The largest source of CO2 emissions is the combustion of coal, oil, natural gas, and transportation. Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. So, cutting down trees reduces the absorption and increases the levels in the atmosphere.
Methane (CH4)
Methane is emitted during coal mining, drilling for oil and natural gas, livestock, other agricultural practices, and landfills. It stays in the atmosphere for about 12 years. Livestock burps methane during digestion. Landfills and melting permafrost also release a lot of methane.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide (N2O) is released from agricultural and industrial activities, the combustion of fossil fuels, and solid waste. It stays in the atmosphere for more than 100 years. Modern-day agriculture practices are another source of N2O.
Fluorinated Gases
Fluorinated Gases are synthetic gases used in various industrial applications, including hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3). These gases are potent and can persist in the atmosphere for several years to thousands of years.
