What Got You Here Won’t Get You There (And That’s a Good Thing)

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There (And That’s a Good Thing)

As we continue celebrating 20 years in business, I’ve been reflecting on the moment we decided to shift our vision. When we first started, our vision was clear and meaningful. But as our business evolved, we realized our vision needed to evolve with it. If we weren’t intentional about refining it, we’d risk staying stuck in a version of our business that no longer fit who we were becoming.

It’s easy to think of vision as a one-and-done statement, something you define early and then let sit on a wall (or buried in a slide deck no one ever opens). But the best companies, the ones that keep growing and winning, know that a vision isn’t static. It should be clear, motivating, and forward thinking. And sometimes, that means adjusting, tweaking, or completely transforming it to align with where you’re headed.

Why Vision Matters More Than Ever

Leaders who articulate a compelling vision create alignment and momentum, while those without one risk stagnation.

Benj put it best in a 2018 post: “A compelling vision makes hard work have a purpose. It creates unity. It creates energy. It creates alignment.” If your vision isn’t doing that, it’s probably time for a tune-up.

Here’s why vision matters:

  • It gives direction. Without a clear destination, your business is just moving for movement’s sake. And if your people don’t know where they’re going, they’ll struggle to get there.
  • It fuels motivation and shapes culture. A strong vision isn’t just strategic, it’s emotional. When your vision is clear, your team understands why their work matters and feels connected to a larger purpose.
  • It creates opportunities. A future-focused vision challenges thinking and drives growth. And when a team is aligned around that vision, they don’t just work together… they win together.

When to Revisit Your Vision

How do you know it’s time for a shift? Here are a few signs:

  1. Your business has evolved, but your vision hasn’t.
  2. Your team isn’t aligned or inspired.
  3. Growth has stalled.
  4. Your industry or customer needs have changed significantly.

The Takeaway for Your Business

If you haven’t revisited your vision recently, now is the time. Ask yourself:

  • Is our vision still true to who we are and where we want to go?
  • Does it inspire and align our team?
  • Is it forward-thinking enough to push us to the next level?

Your vision isn’t just a statement, it’s the foundation of your future success. Keep it clear. Keep it motivating. Keep coming back to it. And don’t be afraid to evolve it when necessary. Because businesses that grow, adapt, and push forward with purpose are the ones that last.
