?? What is Google Tag Manager (GTM) and Why Should You Use It? A Step by Step Guide to Setup

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool that allows you to manage and deploy marketing tags (like Google Analytics, remarketing, and GSC verification) without modifying your website’s code. It simplifies tracking, saves time, and reduces errors.

GTM offers:

  • Easy tag management via a web interface
  • No need for a developer to update tags
  • Centralized control for all tracking services

In my latest tutorial, I walk you through setting up Google Search Console using GTM, enabling easy website verification and gaining insights into your site's performance.

Step by Step Guide for Setting Up GSC Using Google Tag Manager

Follow these steps carefully to setup GSC using tag manager properly.

Step 1: Create or Sign in to Google Tag Manager Account

  • Go to Google Tag Manager: Navigate to Google Tag Manager.
  • Sign in: If you already have a Google account, sign in. Otherwise, create a new Google account.
  • Create a New Container: Once logged in, click on "Create Account" and follow the prompts to set up a new container. Choose "Web" as the target platform.

Step 2: Add Google Tag Manager Code to Your Website

  • Access the GTM Container Code: After setting up the container, you will see the GTM installation code. Copy this code.
  • Insert the Code into Your Website: Place the provided GTM code in the <head> and <body> sections of your website’s HTML, as instructed. If you're using a CMS (e.g., WordPress), look for a plugin that facilitates adding GTM codes.

Step 3: Set Up Google Search Console (GSC)

  • Go to Google Search Console: Navigate to Google Search Console.
  • Add a Property: Once signed in, click "Add Property" and choose the correct property type (either Domain or URL prefix).
  • Verify Ownership: Google Search Console will require ownership verification. Choose the “HTML tag” verification method, and Google will provide a meta tag.

Step 4: Add the Meta Tag to Google Tag Manager

  • Create a New Tag in GTM:In your GTM account, click on "Tags" and then "New."Click on “Tag Configuration” and select the “Custom HTML” tag type.Paste the meta tag from Google Search Console into the HTML box.Enable Tag Firing: Under “Triggering,” select the “All Pages” trigger so that this tag fires on every page load.
  • Save the Tag: After adding the meta tag, save your tag configuration.

Step 5: Publish Your Changes in Google Tag Manager

  • Preview Your Tag: Before publishing, click on the “Preview” button in GTM to ensure the tag is firing correctly.
  • Submit Your Container: If the preview shows that everything is working, click on “Submit” to publish your container.

Step 6: Verify Ownership in Google Search Console

  • Go Back to GSC: After publishing the GTM container, return to Google Search Console and click on the “Verify” button.
  • Confirmation: If everything is set up correctly, Google will verify your ownership, and you will see a success message.

Step 7: Monitor and Troubleshoot

  • Check GSC for Data: After verification, you can start monitoring your website's performance through GSC.
  • Debugging: If the verification fails, make sure the GTM code is correctly placed on all pages, and ensure the meta tag from GSC is accurately added in GTM.

Extra Tips:

  • Use GTM's "Preview" Mode: Always test your tags using GTM’s preview mode to confirm that everything is working as expected before publishing.
  • Regular Monitoring: Once verified, you should regularly check your GSC for any issues, errors, or warnings related to your site’s performance.

With these steps, you should have successfully set up Google Search Console using Google Tag Manager without needing to manually edit your website's HTML. This method is perfect for SEO specialists, marketers, and website owners looking to streamline their website management processes.
