What is Good Web Traffic?

What is Good Web Traffic?

Getting traffic to your website is great!

It gives you a warm feeling inside to know that people are visiting your website. The higher the number, the bigger your ego.

But was all traffic created equal? And if not, what is good traffic?

Over the last 12 months there has been a revolution in thinking when it comes to online marketing. Just a few years ago, general website traffic was a key metric when it came to measuring the success of digital marketing campaigns.

Now, the game is changing.

Companies are beginning to realise that, when it comes to web traffic, quality wins over quantity in the majority of cases.

Before I get really stuck into this article, I want to ask a quick question.

Would you rather have 10 sales from 100 visitors, or 20 sales from 1,000 visitors?

This is a question that has no definite answer, but I’m very much in the mindset that I’d rather have 10 sales from 100 visitors. This is for 3 important reasons.

It means I’m sending traffic to my site that is engaged by the content I’m presenting.

My cost per sale/acquisition/conversion is lower.

My website is converting brilliantly well.

Some would argue that the higher level of traffic presents an opportunity to convert more people going forward and that the higher number of sales is a no brainer, but I’d rather build upon a strong base than backtrack to improve what has already been done.

So what is good traffic and how will it help you?

Put simply, good traffic is traffic that converts, or is likely to convert. Good traffic is more likely to engage with your content, and is also more likely to subscribe to your newsletter, follow your social media profiles, and subscribe to your RSS feed.

Good traffic is traffic that will take notice of you. It will spend more than just a few seconds on your site, it will view more than the first page it landed on, and it will come back to your site again and again.

Good traffic will buy products from you, tell the world about you, recommend you, review you, interact with you, and generally make your website the hottest place on the web by being part of a vibrant community you’ve created around your content.

As you’ve probably guessed, good traffic, is targeted traffic!

Now, you may be thinking to yourself that this traffic doesn’t exist. But I can assure you it does. Rich veins of traffic are everywhere on the web, and if you’re doing something amazing online, there is traffic out there that will do all those things I’ve listed above.

Where do you find that good traffic?

Good traffic isn’t easy to find.

Actually, scrap that. Good traffic is easy to find, it’s just difficult identifying what makes traffic good in the first place.

Companies don’t spend enough time identifying who it really is that will be interested in what they have to offer. Too many companies simply target some loose demographics and accept that their high cost per sale is simply a cost of doing business.

This way of thinking is backwards!

To find good traffic, you need to have a razor sharp focus on exactly who it is you should be targeting to get to your website. You should have a clear audience profile in mind and know exactly where they spend their time online.

As soon as you know who is most likely to engage with you, and you know where they live online, you can begin sending this super-targeted traffic to your website.

Once you do this, the chances of that traffic engaging with you, or even buying from you, are massively increased.

So in the future, when you promote your website or blog, remember to ensure that you’re sending the highest quality traffic possible. If you do this, I assure you the results will be vastly improved and you’ll save yourself a lot of time and money.

What do you think?

Do you think I’m talking nonsense? Maybe you have some suggestions you’d like to make yourself? If you do please leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you.
