In the last edition, I shared how I gathered courage to take that first step on the bridge. Like any other initiative, there were varying reactions as to how people saw and perceived my initiative.?Some encouraged me to move forward, some just acknowledged, and some remained indifferent to what I did.?
It was enjoyable and fulfilling to see people encourage and acknowledge me. I felt an immediate connection with them. A quick sense of belonging dawned on me. With that joy in my heart, I went ahead to face the difficult ones - those who were indifferent to me.
Alas! I hadn’t reached the nirvana state yet and soon that bubble of joy busted into a stream of anger, frustration and eventually tears. That’s the cycle I have been experiencing for many years.?Whenever I would be upset, first will come anger, then frustration and then tears. I needed to deal with this cycle as it was a pattern for me. A pattern that has been hard wired in my brain for many years.
I took a courageous step towards this pattern and started to recognize physiological changes related to the first phase – Anger. I knew my cheeks would feel the heat of anger and that’s where I had to take control. I used techniques like drinking a sip of water or counting till 10 or taking a deep breath or seeking permission to walk out for some time or pause. This helped me get my feelings and emotions under control in the very first phase, so that phase 2 – frustration and phase 3 – tears don’t happen.
I had got control over my pattern and I moved ahead with confidence, crossing that bridge everyday with a smile and an open heart; for I had started to experience and believe in “What goes around, comes around…”. It might take time, but it does happen.?
Today, a lot of those difficult people (while they seemed difficult to me but it was never about them) have become very good friends. What worked for me was one courageous step, resilience to keep trying and belief that what goes around, comes around.
Have a courageous and a resilient week ahead.
P.S. If you see carefully the bridge in the image makes a sign of infinity – what goes around, comes around.
