What Gets In the Way?

Welcome to “Thoughtful Thursdays!”

The topic that we are discussing these days is “Self-Discipline – A Miracle or A Practice !!!!”

This Week’s Question is:

Question – I want to stay disciplined and focussed to continuously work towards my goals, however most often I get distracted, lose my focus, my enthusiasm and get derailed. What’s happening?   

Answer – Most of us if not all, would love to stay committed to our personal and professional goals, keep cruising along, overcoming any obstacles and reach our milestones, right?

Let’s explore what happens on the way, why do we fall short by miles?

There could be multiple reasons for what stops us from reaching our dreams. We looked at “the stories in our head” being one of the primary reasons. But then what creates these stories – its important to understand that to recreate the stories that work for us.

One of the most important reasons is “Beliefs and Past Patterns”. Our Beliefs and Past Patterns are the base of the stories that we keep creating in our heads. Let’s examine it a bit more closely -

Beliefs and Past Patterns - All of us have been used to behaving in a certain way. How we behave and our default response is a function of the conditioning that we have received since our childhood. It is said that by the time we are 35 yrs old, 95% of who we are is already programmed and ingrained in us. What this means is that we start acting by default rather than by choice. Scary, isn't it!

So, when we decide to transform long-term behaviour, there is going to be a definite resistance from our mind. On the one hand, your conscious mind wants to bring in the change, at the same time the sub-conscious mind whose primary responsibility is to keep you safe and happy, resists this, based on your past behaviour patterns.

To change deep-rooted behaviour, it is essential to overcome such resistance and force yourself to act in new ways, despite the resistance and uncomfortable thoughts in your mind.

This can happen by constantly being aware of your thoughts and questioning them to ensure you are only listening to and obeying thoughts that are empowering and helping you to move forward towards your goals. You need to either ignore the disempowering thoughts or swap them with positive thoughts. This needs practice, however, once you are back in control, there is only success and positivity in your life!

So the next time you want to get up early and you hear your mind give you excuses of “why tomorrow is a better day to get up and today you should continue to sleep”, overcome that resistance to still get up and “Master your Mind”!

Self-Awareness is the first step to any desired change in one’s life!
