What is Generative AI, actually?

The Evolution of Artificial Intelligence

In the ever-evolving business landscape, one term that consistently creates waves is 'Artificial Intelligence' or AI. (Anything Imagined, as I tend to call it)

Over the years, AI has progressed from executing simple, rule-based tasks to performing complex jobs, emulating human-like decision-making capabilities.

AI, at its core, is designed to analyze data, learn from it, and make decisions or predictions.

Now, imagine if AI could go a step further, not just learning from data but also creating new, original content from what it has learned. This is where 'Generative AI' comes in, and it's an innovation that's turning heads in every industry.

The Magic of Generative AI

To understand Generative AI, think about how an artist works.

They learn by observing the world around them, understanding colors, shapes, and techniques. Then, they use this knowledge to create their unique art.

Generative AI works in a similar way. It learns from loads of data and then uses this knowledge to generate something entirely new and unique.

This 'generation' can take many forms, from writing a piece of text, creating a piece of music, designing new products, to even creating a whole new video game environment. Generative AI is essentially the creative cousin in the AI family.

What makes Generative AI so... special. Isn't normal AI enough?

Traditional AI is primarily about understanding and making decisions. For example, it can analyze customer data and predict who might be interested in your new product. Typically it takes a lot of time (months!) and effort to create any traditional AI, train it and get it to a mediocre level of execution of the 1 specific task the AI has been created for.

Any traditional AI is trained with millions of data input

Generative AI takes this learning and adds a layer of creativity on top. It can create personalized marketing emails for each customer, generate new product designs based on trends, or even write code to develop new software. It's about creation, not just decision-making.

Generative AI is pre-trained with billions of data input

Because Generative AI comes pre-trained, it is already very mediocre, in a wide variety of tasks. Without any of your efforts...

Without any efforts of training, you have access to a wide variety of tasks that a Generative AI model can execute, perfectly mediocre.

Abbreviations. Industry terms. Explained

There are a... LOT of abbreviations and specific terms in the field AI. Like any other project I get excited about, I find a lot of abbreviations I have no clue on what they actually mean.

Throughout time, the following terms have helped me navigate this Generative AI space to grasp and understand:

  • Algorithm = Using historic information to make a prediction about the future
  • AI = Artificial Intelligence = a branch of computer science that aims to create machines or software that can mimic human intelligence, such as learning from experiences, understanding complex content, recognizing patterns, making decisions, and carrying out tasks that require human-like understanding.
  • ML = Machine Learning = A scoring system that scores the probability of what you are about to do.
  • LLM = Large Language Model = advanced type of artificial intelligence that has been trained on a vast amount of text data, allowing it to generate human-like text based on the input it receives.
  • GLLM = Generative Large Language Model = an AI model that not only understands and processes vast amounts of text data, but can also create or 'generate' new, human-like output, such as writing essays, creating poetry, or answering questions in a conversational manner.
