What Are Gabions?
Gabions are wire baskets mainly constructed from galvanized steel, filled with refined rock, slate, local stone or other cheap materials, including reclaimed and recycled aggregates and then linked together to form walls, retain river banks, support earth banks and dozens of other uses.
Gabion walls are becoming ever popular not just because they look good, but they are cheap to install and are able to withstand pressure without deforming due to their flexibility
Cost Effectiveness
Gabions are considered a cost-effective landscape feature. The steel cages are most commonly made of welded 3-inch mesh and cost about $25 (£18) to $55 (£39) per cubic yard.
The rockfill is where costs can start to increase dramatically. You can used almost anything to fill gabions with, but most people will opt for decorative rock or stone-fill, which can be expensive if you don’t shop around.
