What freedom does your team need at work?
Hello and welcome back to my LinkedIn newsletter! In this edition of the newsletter, we will talk about ‘Freedom for your team’.
There are four stages of a career, and they are all related to your contribution level. Each stage requires a different level of freedom for a person to be successful and continue to grow into the next level.
You start by contributing dependently, then move on to become more independent before you to start learning about interdependencies and start contributing through others. In the fourth stage, your contributions are more on a strategic level. These stages are based on research by Dr Gene Dalton and Dr Paul Thompson. You can read more about it here.
As a leader, you may already be in the fourth stage of contribution, or you may be well on your way to getting there. You have been through the previous stages and have been successful in growing. Now you need to ensure that your team performs at their peak and that each one of the team members continues to contribute at a higher level. You may easily relate to the following aspects of freedom, that your team needs, to continue to perform at their best!
What do they say?
As a leader, you must be able to provide the atmosphere or psychological safety so that the team members feel:
·??????Free to share feedback and express concerns.
·??????Confident and empowered to share ideas without the fear of humiliation.
·??????Enabled to formulate personal opinions and talk about their opinions, to each other and the leadership teams.
What do they think?
As a leader, you need to also provide an environment which allows team members to challenge themselves, expand their thinking and spread their wings. Such opportunities should be available to everyone on an equal basis without any discrimination. You need to encourage them:
·??????In seeking opportunities or assignments that allow them to think beyond the set patterns.
·??????To come up with business-critical thoughts and experiment with them so that they can be developed further.
·??????Seek vertical and horizontal growth with an aim to expand their knowledge and skills.

What do they do?
Experiences shape a person into a leader. As a leader you must allow your team members:
·??????A chance to experiment and learn from failures. You must allow people to make an honest mistake and should support them to recover from such mistakes rather than penalizing them.
·??????The freedom to make choices that help them balance their work and life. It may start with a simple freedom about working hours or place of work.
·??????An option to act as a representative of the team in external situations, especially with clients. Such experiences are invariably a great opportunity to learn and grow.
If you want to continue to grow fast, make sure that you offer the freedom to your team. As they enjoy the freedom, they will continue to grow faster and the whole team will perform at their best. You are bound to exceed your targets and always overachieve your goals.

2 年Freedom - Responsibility, it may look like an irony, but with more responsibility comes freedom, organisations vision and mission should be in synchronicity, and leaders need to work with the vision of creating tiers of leadership, and it should evolve, for that commitment and loyalty is a precondition, and that is what is lacking in today's organizations.
