What flowers taught me about being a REPUBLIC

26th January is when Bengaluru has the famous Flower show at Lal bagh. The beauty of each variety is a sight for us to enjoy. The flowers also show us how kind Nature is to indulge us with the varieties she gives us. The multitude of colours is unbelievable. The way they grow together makes them beautiful designs to be admired. Spring is the season of hope & color, thereby creating JOY everywhere. Today is also the onset of Spring officially as we celebrate Basant Panchami, the day we pray to the Goddess of Learning, Maa Saraswati. True wisdom is so beautifully defined by Socrates as " is in knowing you know nothing." That's when you come forward with humility & curiosity.

This guidance and wisdom are missing in the way we behave especially to have an understanding of what a Republic means. According to the dictionary, a Republic is a country that has an elected government and an elected leader (president). We have a constitution that is our guide. While we have learned the first page many do not know what our rights are. We also need to be aware of what is expected of us as citizens.

The power of government is held by the people. The people give power to leaders by electing the officials who represent them and serve their interests. When Nature is allowed to thrive, she is always fresh & gives back unconditionally. It is not about what she can get but what she can give. When you are in bloom you are admired!

When I was looking at all the plants for display, it was clear that each of the flowers that were placed & the color combinations were all about integration & contrast. Isn't that similar to a country as varied as ours which has a varied culture? After all, integrating yet standing out is the main element of a country that has always prided itself in "Unity in Diversity" so beautifully represented in this piece:

With Basant Panchami & our Republic day is celebrated on the same day Nature definitely dominated for me to look at Nature yet again for some life lessons. The walk through the flower show, and the spectacular display of plants & flowers truly put these thoughts in me.
