What was the first time that you made a dream come true?

Do you remember the first time you achieved a bucket list item?
I'll never forget the day I got named as the Program Director at my college radio station, WDBM. I'd wanted to be a radio DJ for years.
I was so obsessed with music and marketing (I didn't know that's what it was at the time) when I was in my late teens that all I could think about was being on air and sharing the most amazing metal, hip hop and alternative music I loved with anyone who would listen.
I made that happen, almost by chance, when I was in college and became a DJ at Impact 89FM.
But that wasn't the moment.
After only a few months there, I realized my calling was not just to spin records and be that cheesy guy telling you the weather while hitting the pin, I wanted more.
I wanted to run things. I wanted to help. I wanted to master the art form and make it better.
One day, our amazing GM, Gary Reid (one of the most inspiring teachers of all time) posted that the station would be hiring a program director. I instantly knew that is what I wanted.
The position required that you have at least one year on-air experience and a junior position at the station. That wasn't me. I was the guy playing heavy metal from Midnight to 2 am on Monday nights (technically Tuesday morning!) Sepultura, Carcass, Acid Bath, Entombed, At the Gates, Pro-Pain ... those were good times.
But I didn't care. I knew it was my destiny. Gary reminded me that I did not meet the qualifications.
I studied. I read. I asked questions. I listened. I took notes. I did everything in my power to learn everything I could about the position in advance of the interview.
I walked in confident, cool and with a presentation that showed my ideas on how the station could improve under my leadership as the program director.
Against all odd, you can probably guess by now, I got the position, beating out other people who were WAY more qualified (on paper) than me.
Already long story short, during my last semester at Michigan State University, WDBM was rated the #1 station in the market 18-34 females. If you know how radio ratings work, especially in 1996, you know just how hard that is.
Everyone at the station worked really, really hard to make that happen and everyone who was there in those 2 years deserves credit because it took all those pieces to make it happen.
That was the first time in my life that I took a step back and realized that I was living in my dream. I held my vision so tightly that no one, not a thing was going to get in my way.
And it wasn't until years later, in fact, this year, this moment, right now that I realized the power in having an unshakeable purpose. It guides all your energy and all your decisions.
What is your incredible vision?
