What is Ferrous Sulphate

Ferrous sulphate,also called iron (II) sulphate,is a salt with the formula FeSO4·xH2O.Ferrous sulphate exists in hydrous and anhydrous form.Hydrous and anhydrous ferrous sulphate exist in the form of heptahydrate.Ferrous sulphate is commonly found as a hydrated salt.The hydrous of ferrous sulphate are monohydrate,terrahydrate,pentahydrate and heptahydrate.The most commonly used hydrous ferrous sulphate is monohydrate and heptahydrate.

Ferrous sulphate heptahydrate is abtained by processing ilmenite ore in manufacturing of titanium dioxide,or a co-product of steel picking.When heated above 65 degree celsius,it turn to be ferrous sulphate monohydrate.It is used as a reducing agent in treatment of hazardous waste and as a coagulant in treatment of sewage waste,drinking water,and industrial offuents.It is also used in cement industry to reduce harmful hexavalent chromium content in cement binding agents. In pigment production,it is a useful source of iron.And with a high concentration of iron (around 30%) this by-product can be used as a valuable supplement in animal feeds.
