What is the Facebook “Dislike” button all about?
You might have seen on the news today that Facebook are finally implementing a “dislike” button that users have been asking for so long. I’m sure that all of us that actively use Facebook to promote our businesses will be worried about what this means, the idea of people being able to “dislike” our well-meant updates is quite scary!
It turns out though that a dislike button isn’t an accurate way to describe it. In fact Mark Zuckerberg said specifically that he doesn’t want it to be a way of down voting posts that you find annoying or don’t agree with. Rather the aim is to have a way of expressing empathy to sad events that aren’t appropriate to “like”, such as a family member passing away, or a tragic news story.
It will be interesting to see exactly how they implement this, as they need to be careful not to create something that will put people off sharing updates for fear of getting “dislikes”, or that is open to abuse by cyber bullies.
Facebook have said they are almost ready to start testing it on a small scale, so there will probably be more information soon.
Here is the full announcement by Mark Zuckerberg if you haven’t seen it.
How would you like to see this implemented? And how do you feel about being offered condolences via a button? Let me know what you think in the comments.

9 年I personally don't think for businesses that Facebook is the way to go anymore, yes it got the message out there but with so many people using it as a way to insult or degrade, I feel it's past its use for my business. With Facebook also not allowing all business posts its hard for micro businesses to afford to pay for promoting themselves and now with the dislike button no one can interupt dislike of the business or so called sympathy

9 年To be frank, many of the posts that slide down my timeline I thoroughly "dislike" but we don't say so...they tend to be opinions that are best kept to oneself. Facebook might have "intentions" as to how this may be used but I fear it will be used for negative purposes. I, for one, will retain my distance from Facebook for these reasons.

9 年Yes, dislike is a word that expresses a distaste to something you find negative, sad or repugnant. Then again I think the new addition could have an impact on business reputation if used to dissaprove of something.
