What the f*** is new automotive?

What the f*** is new automotive. That is a really good questions. To get closer to answering it we should first look at traditional automotive and how it's made up.

There is car companies, in automotive industry terms referred to as OEMs (original equipment manufacturers, then there is customers buying their cars. In between there are licensed and unlicensed dealerships and on top comes aftermarket suppliers, insurances and regulatory organs. And last but not least there is all those companies actually developing and building all the different parts, components and subsystems of a car, called automotive suppliers. Supplier are distinguished by classes, Tier1 - meaning they supply directly to the OEM, Tier2 - meaning they supply to Tier1s supplying to OEMs.

Why do I write all this?

Because this is referred to as "#traditional #automotive "

All those companies have something in common. They have been around for decades, let alone almost a century. Take 大众 as an example, founded in 1937. Or 通用汽车 , founded in 1908. Or just look at 福特 , founded in 1908.

And with them have manifested certain standards and processes that are being lived in the automotive industry and are often referred to as the unbearable entry barrier, making it tremendously hard to enter the market. So no surprise there has been very little movement in the auto industry until the early 21. century.

Now comes.... (*drumnroll*)

#new #automotive

So what is now new automotive?

It comes with a paradigm shift of many ways.

  1. no combustion engines -> electric drive
  2. no analogue cars -> highly software driven, digital UX focussed cars
  3. no offline cars -> always online, connected cars with OTA (over the air updates)
  4. no ownership of cars -> platform economy based mobility ecosystems providing on demand shared mobility solutions
  5. going from building cars -> to building multi-use mobility platforms, enabled for highly automated and autonomous driving, with wide variety of use cases
  6. going from driver centric -> to digital user centric, where user experience beats driving performance and excitement
  7. going from a wide range of different brands and models (VW Golf, TRoc, Arteon , Passat, Up, Polo, Taigo, ID3, ID4, ID5, Buzz, Touran, TIGUAN, Sharan, Touareg) oh my ?? -> to very slim product line (comparable to apple IPhone, Google Pixel, Tesla Model 3,X,Y)
  8. going from making money though braking cars, maintenace/service and aftermarket parts -> to making money from abo/flatrate models, ad and premium financed freemium models and shared ownership models

The big new players in my opinion will be (replacing many established OEMs and Tier1s):

英伟达 , Waymo , Innoviz Technologies , Rivian and so many more ??

This is just my personal view on things. I could write so much more on each and every point listed above and you might feel I'm getting really excited about the #new #automotive .

This should be all for now. I'll let you to it, leave a thumbs up or comment so I get a feel for if this topic is interesting for you or not.

Best
