To what extent should a website be responsive? A lot or just normal?

In a service-based company, things can get pretty fast-paced, and deadlines are usually tight. If we spend too much time on QA, we might miss those deadlines. So, we really need to put together a good test plan before we start testing any site. But I've noticed that a lot of time in testing goes into making sure the site is responsive and works well.

A website should be responsive enough so users have a good experience on any device, but you don’t need to go overboard with it.

Here’s a simple approach:

  1. Focus on key devices: Make sure your site works well on the most common devices like:
  2. Good user experience: The site should be easy to use on all these devices, with readable text, clickable buttons, and everything lined up properly.
  3. Set main breakpoints: Stick to around 3 or 4 main screen sizes (like 320px, 768px, 1024px, and 1440px, 2520px). This covers most users without over-complicating things.
  4. Don’t overdo it: You don’t have to make the site perfect for every single screen size out there. Focus on the most popular ones and keep things simple. Too much responsiveness can make development and testing harder than it needs to be.

So, aim for a normal level of responsiveness where the site looks good and works well on the most-used devices. No need to stress over every detail.
