To what extent should museums expand their activities in seeking new audiences?

In a couple of decades, museums have gone far beyond simply showcasing art in galleries. They have been setting up cafés and social events to cater for all types of publics, they have rented spaces... and more recently some of them initiated yoga courses or childcare programs. Reaching new audiences and retain them is crucial to many museums and cultural organisations worldwide.

All these initiatives prove how hybride and welcoming a museum can be. And actually it's a good thing that museums innovate in such projects. It goes against common bias that museums are stuck in the past.

Yet, all these actions highlight how culture is somewhat commodified and the following question everyone should ask is: to what extend do we want museums to be a place for everything?

The article by Daniel Grant (link below) gives a good insight on these issues.
