What to Expect in your first Counseling Session?

What to Expect in your first Counseling Session?

What will happen in your first counseling session?

The Basics:

The first consultation (20-25 mins) is Free of Cost wherein you can explore and understand whether taking up counseling can be beneficial to you or not. In this session, you will know about the mode of the session (online or offline) and also share your preferences on the same, you will know about the charges for the sessions and you can ask any question that you might have about the process of counseling. This would also establish a mutual tone between you and me. If you agree on the terms and feel good about taking up the sessions then we will set up a date and time for the session and I will send a link before 15 mins for the first session. The first session would be on zoom and the subsequent session can be online as well as offline.

The First Session:

I prefer taking charges at the end of the session. We might have many sessions to gain a detailed clarity of a larger process with the ultimate goal of gaining a new perspective and awareness of the concern in question. This first session would be 45 mins and we would start by talking about you and your story. You can talk about your day in general and then share any concerns or issues that you might be facing. If you are unable to pinpoint a concern or issue then we can simply talk about your day and how you are feeling. What you felt or are feeling is a major source of identifying what can be improved.

For the first session, a zoom link will be sent and you can either download the zoom app (if accessing via zoom) or simply sign-up/login into your web account on your laptop.

Before the Session:

Meeting a complete stranger for the first time can invoke many feelings in you- it might make you nervous, scary, and at times, you may even be excited to start this new journey. All these responses are normal. To be better prepared for such a situation, I would recommend:

  • Choose a space where you can openly talk about yourself or your concern
  • Choose a space that is not too hot or too cold for you.
  • If there are noises in the room, then, having an earphone or headphones is highly recommended
  • Ensure that you have a glass of water with you.
  • Choose the timings of the session very carefully. If your mind would be constantly engaged elsewhere you would not be able to get the best out of your session.

During the Session:

I would first ask whether you are comfortable in your space and ask if there is anything in particular that you would like to talk about or the concern that you would want to work upon. We would pick up the conversation from there. Every individual is unique and therefore the session shapes up accordingly.

I would love to hear your stories- and how you are feeling today. We will begin our session with your story- whatever you would want to talk about. Together, we will listen to you without criticism or judgment. In time, as we would go on, you will gain a new perspective and awareness about yourself. This awareness will help you to find practical solutions for your day-to-day challenges.

Know that counseling is not a destination but a process. We need to engage in this process during the session and then refine it to make it work outside of the session. In time, you will gain a new perspective and awareness of the concern in question.

KNOW SOME KEY TERMS AND CONCEPTS:

The key step in any Counselling Session is to understand whom you are meeting. You can take up a Counseling session with the following- a Psychologist, a Counselor, a Clinical Psychologist, and Licensed Mental Health Practitioners. You might find varied definitions of each on Internet as there are no official or legal definitions of the same. I have shared a common understanding of these roles. So, let's understand some key concepts:

Psychologist: An expert who has a Master's in Psychology. It would be desirable if they have some prior experience in the field as a practicing Psychologist.

Counselor: An expert who has a Master's in Psychology either with a specialization in Counseling or Masters in Psychology with a PG Diploma in Counseling. It is always better if they have some prior experience in the field. Most of the Counselors are not registered in India. Counselors who had completed their Advance Diploma in Child Guidance and Counseling from NIPCCD Institute, New Delhi are privileged with the RCI-license.

Clinical Psychologist: An expert who has completed their MPhil in Clinical Psychology from an RCI-licensed institute. These experts are licensed by RCI. You can check up their licenses and relevant details at the RCI website: https://www.rehabcouncil.nic.in/

A Psychologist and a Counselor helps you to identify, and successfully resolve your everyday challenges and concern that you might encounter. They will help you to enhance your quality of life and find balance in your life.

A Clinical Psychologist is an expert who will help you to effectively deal with psychological illness and psychological disorders.
