What To Expect At Hackathons

Hackathons are collaborative programming events that are usually organized by tech companies or other institutions. As an IT consultancy, ROITI had the pleasure to participate in several events of this kind this spring and we are excited to share some of our insights.

People divide into teams, typically including between two and seven individuals. The organizers reveal the hackathon topic on the day of the event, and that's when the real fun begins. Participants must quickly create a new idea, find a solution, and present it clearly and interestingly.

Mentors are crucial for a hackathon. They are representatives of sponsor companies. With their help, young programmers have the opportunity to show off broad skill sets. Georgi Topalov is ROITI’s Cloud Engineering Team Lead and we asked him for his mentorship impressions at FMI’s Hackathon. What struck him was students were using parts of the wrapping foil of their breakfast to fix a printer.

What is the purpose of a hackathon?

?I think there are several ways in which one can benefit from attending such events“ – says Data Scientist Dimitar Glavinkov after mentoring at AUBG’s hackathon Hack AUBG, organized by the club The Hub. “The first and the most obvious one is the networking not only among participants, but also judges, mentors, and other guests. Such events allow participants to experiment with solutions and technologies in a more engaging way that one is unlikely to experience in a different context. Although the time pressure may be stressful at times, it pushes towards creativity and leads to resolving unconventional problems.”

Hackathon participants try to adapt their ideas to what users on the market would need. Including a viable business plan in the judging criteria is unique to such events, according to our mentors. This is the driver for turning their software into a product. “This is just as important as the technical solution if you strive for success in the industry” – shares Dimitar.

According to our mentors, it is important to notice certain qualities in someone at these events. These qualities include the ability to understand suggestions quickly, being open to new knowledge, and being confident under pressure. Students stand out when they eagerly and actively listen to the advice they are being given.

Young people and technology

According to Georgi, today's students are interested in programming and modern technologies from an earlier age, compared to 5-10 years ago. They are also more self-driven and less dependent on teachers and professors for knowledge. Through hackathons or other competitions, young people today are always finding new and innovative ways to challenge themselves and showcase their knowledge and skills.
