What to expect from the next iPhone
Welcome to the 14th issue of the Tech Wrap-Up Europe newsletter.
Every fortnight, we'll be sharing interesting stories and expert insights from LinkedIn members.?
In this issue, Sam Shead looks at what people can expect from the next iPhone, how ChatGPT Enterprise differs from the standard version, and what the job market looks like in tech.?
苹果 has sent out invites to the media and analysts for an event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, on 12 September. While the invite didn't specify exactly what's going to be announced at the event, reports indicate Apple will unveil the new iPhone 15.?
So what should consumers expect? Well, if the last few years are anything to go by … not that much.?
Apple typically makes incremental changes to the iPhone each time it brings out a new model. Possibly because the last few models of the iPhone have still sold like hotcakes: if it ain't broke, don't fix it, as the saying goes.?
One notable overhaul that appears to be on the way is the introduction of a USB-C charging port as Apple looks to start complying with recently introduced EU regulations. That should mean fewer cables for iPhone owners to carry around.?
"If you upgrade, you’ll have to say goodbye to a cable type that has been around since 2012, first introduced with the iPhone 5," wrote tech consultant and advisor Stuart Miles on LinkedIn.?
The iPhone 15 has also been tipped to get the "dynamic island" feature that was only previously available on the 14 Pro. This replaces the notch at the top of the device with a smaller cutout in the screen.
The standard iPhone 15 is set to come in two sizes once again, with a regular and plus model. Apple is also set to release two Pro versions of the iPhone 15, with faster processors, better cameras and better batteries. Reports suggest it may also swap the exterior material from steel to titanium to reduce the weight.?
"If the iPhone 15 proves to be a hit, then Apple could become the number one smartphone player in the world for the first time," wrote CNBC senior correspondent Arjun Kharpal , citing research from Counterpoint Research .?
How else could Apple shake up its iPhone line? Share your thoughts in the comments below.?
OpenAI has started to show that it's possible to make serious sums of money from large language models.?
Since launching nine months ago, ChatGPT is now used in 80% of Fortune 500 companies.?
The artificial intelligence lab, which is backed by LinkedIn-parent company Microsoft, has now released a paid version of ChatGPT for large businesses, in what is being called the startup’s "biggest announcement" since it debuted the consumer version of the chatbot in November.?
This new iteration of the AI-powered tool, ChatGPT Enterprise, can accept much longer prompts, features encryption and other privacy safeguards and runs on OpenAI’s most powerful model, GPT-4. AI advisor and investor Allie K. Miller highlights some of the major changes here .?
"To gain enterprise adoption, products face a higher bar than consumer," wrote venture capitalist Eze Vidra. "Security, SLAs, access control, are just a few of the minimum requirements to enter."
Legal consultant Emma Haywood said on LinkedIn that an upgrade that offers improved security measures and promises not to train itself on user data is a step in the right direction, noting that many businesses experimenting with ChatGPT have had to rely on company policies and technical workarounds to try to address the risks.
However, she warned that it may not be a perfect solution from a legal and compliance perspective, pointing out that questions remain around infringement and ownership of IP in AI-generated content.
"Customising ChatGPT Enterprise may tip a business over into being a 'provider' of the tool, which creates a heavier compliance burden under new regulatory regimes such as the EU’s AI Act," she added.?
OpenAI could hit over $1bn (€915m; £785m) in revenue over the next year — far more than the company's previous revenue projections, reports The Information , citing an anonymous source.
The jobs market in the tech industry has evolved considerably over the last two years, from the hiring frenzy in the midst of the Covid pandemic to the more recent mass layoffs across many of the big tech firms.?

But what's going on now? Fuelled by the excitement around AI, more school leavers than ever in the UK are pursuing computer science degrees at university. And while many displaced tech workers are looking to other industries , roughly a third are choosing to stay in tech, according to LinkedIn's Workforce Report .?
Tech recruiter James Toynton believes there are several reasons people are attracted to jobs in the tech sector including salary and relatively flexible working conditions.?
"Medtech, fintech and biotech are all paying a lot to attract the increasingly few skilled tech engineers, even in a remote-working capacity," he told LinkedIn News, adding that shares are often given to employees.?
While more people are studying computer science at university, there's still a tech skills gap that needs plugging.?
"Not enough universities are providing the relevant skill sets required for the market, so with increasingly fewer engineers available over time, salary inflation has been inevitable," Toynton said.
When it comes to compensation, things aren't quite as good as they used to be, according to James Caan CBE , a recruitment expert and a former investor on Dragon's Den.?
"The days of sky-high paychecks and exciting benefits are dwindling as big tech starts to practise its own version of austerity; the companies that were once the Shangri-La of tech workers now resemble any other corporate business and have a reduced appeal," Caan told LinkedIn News.?
Many tech startups are keen to snap up some of the talent that's flowing out of big tech as these people are likely to have acquired certain skills.?
"The benefits are know-how in specific domains, attributed prestige and the associated attraction to work alongside such engineers," said Toynton, noting that they often have certain ways-of-working and use methodologies that a startup might benefit from implementing.?

The upcoming iPhone 15, expected to be announced by Apple, might not bring significant changes, but it could feature a USB-C charging port and a "dynamic island" to replace the notch. Apple's lineup may include standard and plus models, as well as Pro versions with improved processors, cameras, and battery life. Reports suggest a shift from steel to titanium for the exterior material. Apple's potential success could make it the top smartphone player globally.

1 年Planning to cut waste… by making people have to buy new cables. At least my Qi standard wireless charger will still work across versions. Hopefully.
