What to expect from COP27, Companies Have No Credible Plans for Climate Action and Are Your Leadership Programs Undermining Your DEI Goals??

COP27 - Addressing The Green Issues That Matter
The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) will be commencing from November 6th -18th in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt. A gathering of governments and leaders to discuss and agree on ways to reduce global warming, set emissions reduction targets, and protect natural resources, among other things.?
With bushfires, wild weather, and floods wreaking havoc in Australia, addressing climate change may be more important than ever.
The agenda is full and we hope that a lot of actionable strategies and commitments will be a result of the event. Expect a bit of backlash from the event for 'greenwashing'. Greta Thunberg has already expressed that she will be boycotting the event due to Human Rights issues in Egypt. She has called the event a performance "greenwashing, lying and cheating".
Outcomes we expect to see:
Research Shows Companies Have No Credible Action Plans for Climate Change
ClimateAction 100+ has released its latest Climate Benchmark report, which evaluates the performance of 159 focus companies in relation to the initiative's three goals: 1) Emission reduction; 2) governance; and 3) disclosure
The benchmark is intended to assist investors in tracking a company's progress, determining whether or not its transition strategy is Paris-aligned, and informing their engagement and decision making.
According to the initiative, net zero commitments are not being matched by the implementation of "credible decarbonisation strategies" or concrete action. According to the initiative, only 20% of focus companies have set 'ambitious' medium-term targets covering all material scopes aligned with a 1.5°C pathway, and even fewer (10%) have set short-term targets (up to 2025) aligned with a 1.5°C scenario and covering all material emissions.?
Only half (51%) of focus companies have pledged to cover all material glasshouse gas (GHG) emissions (including Scope 3 emissions), and only 10% have pledged to fully align their capex plans with their GHG targets or the Paris Agreement.?

What we think?
In light of these findings, we think that governing bodies such as ClimateAction 100+ have to emphasise the he importance of companies providing more detailed information about the practical steps they will take to begin meeting their net zero commitments in light of these findings.?
It is also likely that a lot of these targets were not science based when first developed and it is also likely to be effected by rising inflation, increasing costs of operating a business and the required investments to start and continue decarbonisation.?
This Week In Leadership
Are your leadership programs jeopardising your DEI Goals?
Staff and leadership development programs can be one of an organisation's greatest tools to drive team wide performance, attract and retain the best talent, promote inclusivity and reinforce cultural values. Or it can be what undermines it...
1. Diversity of thought comes from a diverse group of people. Very few of us are self aware enough to know the extent to which our own ideals and past experiences limit the range of possibilities we're willing to engage with when it comes to entertaining new ideas or trying to solve wicked problems. The value of a diverse group of people is the diversity of perspective that is brought to the table. Ensuring your leadership development programs are equitable is not just a cultural imperative if you want to maintain engagement but it also better positions your organisation to identify and train the best talent to be amongst the decision makers now and into the future.
2. Leadership development builds team members Core Self Evaluation skills. Greater resilience, emotional stability and positive self worth allows individuals to navigate dynamic environments, challenge the status quo and take ownership over individual and team based goals. Simply put... leadership development sets individuals up to contribute to team success.
3. Leadership development helps you attract and retain the best talent. Leadership development programs that create equitable opportunities across the organisation, emphasises to the high performers that success is realised through the efforts of all and building the collective capability is everyone's responsibility.
