What ever happened to the words "Thank you"?

What ever happened to the words "Thank you"?

Such simple words, but for some reason seldom used in today society. "Thank you"....what ever happened to these words? Has society forgotten them? Do they still hold any meaning?

It doesn't take much to say these very simple, but powerful words yet we don't hear them or very little at all.

Basic social etiquette doesn't seem to exist anymore. When I mean basic social etiquette, I am talking about things like -

  • Don't barge past people in shopping centres
  • Push in front of queues
  • Say "sorry" if you accidently nudge someone walking past them
  • Make an effort to move out of someone's path coming toward you
  • When cars are merging onto the freeway.....LET THEM IN!

I could go on...but I think you may get the point.

I have six children (yes, your read correct) six. Four daughters and two sons aged 20, 19, 5, 2 and 2months. My wife and I ensure that they use their "basic" manners such as please, thank you, sorry, excuse me etc and we think we have done well as they do exercise these "basics".

Just this morning, I was waiting in the Pathology waiting room and a gentleman brought out his mobile phone and started watching videos, sound out aloud, no headphones so we could all hear what he was watching!......Is this behaviour considered "rude" or it is the norm now?.....no basic social etiquette.

Maybe it's just me, or I am getting older...(maybe the latter!), but it does not take much to say these basics words which can have such a positive impact on the recipient.

Take the time to say "Please", "Excuse me", "Thank you" and "Sorry".....you will make a difference....

Thank you for reading this post!

Susan we are from the old school, some of the new generation parents these days take it that it is a given that they they appreciate what we do and that thanks should not have to be said. I dont agree with it, but I think that the fast past life that some young couples live has contributed towards it, or so I have been told.

As Brendan Fraser's adorable character in Blast From The Past says, "Manners are a way of showing other people we care about them." It doesn't get more concise than that! And people do respond. I am always amazed at how warm people can be when you're polite, or even if you give them a quick smile as you walk past. We don't know what does people are carrying, and just that little consideration can make their load easier. Thanks for sharing this post.

Thank you for this great post Simon. It is really wonderful that you and your wife are raising your children with such good values. I was going to agree but there is more in my mind - I feel sorry for the poor people who did not get the important lessons from their parents and are now lacking the basic social skills you are talking about... I guess for them it is normal because they don't know any better. With a bit of a compassion we can definitely help those people become more considerate and ourselves become less judgemental :)) Sometimes there is more to what we see...
