What is EV?

What is EV?

I have been racking my brains the last few weeks, trying to decide what I wanted my first article to be. Sitting on a beach in Egypt thinking 'ooooh that's a good idea' or 'that will ruffle some feathers'.

The problem is there are lots of things I could write about, both good ideas and feather ruffling stuff, and I found myself overthinking it.

The whole point of the newsletter isn't to show off, or shove EV down people's throats, so why does it need a holy grail of a first post. So I stopped thinking about it.

That led me to this...

Just what exactly is EV?

If you asked a random person on the street where I live in 'What does EV mean?' the response would likely sound something like 'mate it's them cars that have a battery innit?', and they would be correct.

The fact is, you could ask anyone that question and they would have some sort of knowledge or opinion. It will mean different things to different people, and we all know, or have been reminded frequently that everyone's opinion matters, even those that wear Nike Air Max trainers.

We have those that regularly say 'I'm not interested in EV, i'll stick to my V8' or 'EV is a load of rubbish, i'll never buy one', but they're just delaying the inevitable, and showing they know something about it, even if in a negative light.

I am a firm believer that a lot of education needs to happen in the world, in order for 'EV' to be widely accepted. After all, are most of the people spreading this rubbish just repeating the amazing journalism they've seen in the Mail Online?

To me, EV is much more than 'a car with a battery', and as someone who works in EV, I know it as an ever growing and ever advancing industry, it's a switch to cleaner transport, and yes, it's the extremely exciting battery cars that accelerate like nothing else on the road, just without the deafening noise of Nike Air Max guys V8.

But there is so much within EV that people aren't aware of. The car manufacturers competing for market share, the battery technology that will eventually take us away from Lithium-Ion, the charging infrastructure that grows daily, Tesla on-boarding every other car manufacturer like a supportive yet 'i'm keeping my eye on you' type of big brother, and the growing used EV market that opens up opportunities for more people.

We are seeing change, not too dissimilar to the internet. It is scary for some and exciting for others, it is an opportunity, it is the new way of travel, but don't let me sway you, I just hope one person takes something away from this onto Google and learns something, or add some value in the comments.

Good thought Jordan and my thoughts chime with Randal 'Tiny' Smith BEM MSc BEng(Hons) CEng FRAeS FInstLM - EV as a method of propulsion is nothing new and many UK towns ran trams and trolley buses (which are amazing). The recent excitement around EV proves electrical propulsion is far superior to ice with a long way to go on energy storage (battery chemistry) It is the most exciting thing since the blast furnace was invented. We are the cusp of a change but in a very connected world that our industrial ancestors did not have.

VW Group just announced that they have reduced their EV manufacturing volumes considerably due to lack of demand. This somewhat proves that the vast majority of consumers do not actually want a flawed, restrictive, expensive EV.

Good article Jordan, and thankfully I don't wear Nike Air Max (they don't come in size 15!).? EVs have been around for nearly 200 years, the first being invented in 1832, well before an ICE engine.?In fact, in the 1890s, they were actually outselling gas cars by 10:1. But the challenge is that owning an EV is a change of mindset, and people are naturally resistant to, and often fear change.?But as you say, everyone will be driving an EV at sometime in the future - even the hydrogen protagonists! People may not be able to afford a new EV now (and you often find those same people complaining of that cannot afford a new ICE vehicle either), but the second hand EV market is growing, just as it did and does with ICE vehicles, bringing EVs in the range of everyone's finances. So it's always about trying to coax people towards an EV by breaking down those fear barriers as you are trying to do here, but it is a massive uphill struggle against the weight of negativity from the media. But mighty rivers and valleys were created by small pebbles gradually wearing away the rock across small streams. So it's all about us EV protagonists who know the truth of the industry to keep getting the message out there in any way that we can.

Having over many years driven some of the best cars in the market I've found driving my EV is possibly the easiest car to drive. I regularly changed my cars every 6 months or so sometimes even less but this is the longest I've kept a car since my TTR in 2000. People who moan about EV's clearly have never owned one.
