What is an EORI number?

Picking up on some FAQs we hear at VARTAN Towers, I though it would be helpful to address them here.

So, here's the first in a series explaining what an EORI number is and its purpose.

An Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number is a unique identifier assigned by customs authorities in the European Union (EU) to businesses and individuals involved in importing and exporting goods within and outside the EU. In the context of the UK, the EORI number is used by businesses to interact with UK customs authorities when moving goods into or out of the country. Having an EORI number is crucial for any business involved in international trade in the UK. It streamlines the customs process and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. For businesses, obtaining and using an EORI number correctly is an essential part of international trade operations.

Key Points about EORI Numbers in the UK:

Format: A UK EORI number typically starts with the prefix "GB" followed by a 12-digit number, which often incorporates the company's VAT number if they are VAT registered.

Purpose:

Customs Declarations: It's required for making customs declarations and for other interactions with customs authorities.

Tracking and Identification: It helps in tracking and identifying shipments and ensuring compliance with customs regulations.

Simplifying Trade: It facilitates smoother trade and customs processes between the UK and other countries.

Who Needs an EORI Number:

Businesses Importing or Exporting Goods: UK businesses involved in importing or exporting goods to/from the EU or other countries need an EORI number.

Non-UK Businesses: Non-UK businesses that move goods to or from the UK also need an EORI number.

How to Obtain an EORI Number:

Application Process: Businesses can apply for an EORI number through the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) website. The application process typically involves providing business details and, if applicable, VAT registration information.

Processing Time: The processing time for obtaining an EORI number can vary, but it usually takes a few days.

Post-Brexit Considerations:

Separate EORI Numbers for EU Trade: Post-Brexit, UK businesses that trade with the EU may need both a UK EORI number and an EU EORI number. The UK EORI number is used for interactions with UK customs, while an EU EORI number is needed for dealing with customs in EU member states.

Practical Steps to Apply for an EORI Number:

Visit the HMRC Website: Go to the HMRC website and navigate to the EORI number application section.

Complete the Application Form: Provide the necessary details such as business name, address, and VAT number (if applicable).

Submit the Application: Follow the instructions to submit the application online.

Receive the EORI Number: After processing, you will receive your EORI number, which can then be used for customs procedures.
