What is Enterprise Architecture and Why should we care about it? -

Above question is often asked by non-tech savvy leaders looking for a simple business friendly answer.

How do we answer the above questions posed by a non-technology savvy audience in the language of business outcomes in less than one minute?

  • Answer: Enterprise Architecture (EA) is an investment, an insurance and an accelerator you need for your business
  • Architecture is an Investment to yield both short and long term optimum ROI (return on investment) on business spend while identifying and preventing the risk - business outcome focus here is Money
  • Architecture is an Insurance to protect from and minimize risk in case of an exposure to business operations due to market disruptions, geopolitical events, technology evolutions, and several other unknown factors - business outcome focus here is?Risk
  • Architecture is an Accelerator to enable change in business transformation across people/workforce, revenue streams, processes, data, technologies, customers, business partners suppliers, distributors/brokers/agents, regulatory/compliance stakeholders?- business outcome focus here is?Time?for New Value Creation and Delivery via new business operating models?

While a technical savvy person may say the same can be said about any Technology or Software Solutions, EA covers Technology and Software Solutions holistically via Technology Architecture, Software Architecture, and Solution Architecture while also paving a robust foundation for Business with Business Architecture by maximizing the value of data using Information Architecture and Integration Architecture, and protecting the business using Security Architecture and Infrastructure Architecture.

What are some other ways you can provide a business friendly answer to explain EA to a non-tech savvy person or for an elementary school child who knows nothing about IT?

Venky, It's an interesting thought that "EA covers Technology and Software Solutions holistically"; I had thought of EA as the plumbing. If "EA covers Technology and Software Solutions holistically", I would add in my explanation of EA that it provides the backbone for end-user tools that increase employee productivity and satisfaction with the work environment, both yield financial benefits.

Thank you Venky for surfacing this topic and elevating the view and critical thinking of corporate executives. Executives are eager to understand how their enterprise architecture acts as the circulatory system of their business, enabling deeper market penetration due to improved customer interaction and risk management.

Well said, Venky. Too often companies focus only on application solution architecture due to competing IT resources. In Business Transformations, a holistic approach is needed. Hope you’re doing well.
