What is enough?

What is enough?

The most simple of questions, but one that is as revealing as it is difficult, as tricky as it is powerful.

Why?

It is a shortcut to the most basic of things: What do I need?

But then quickly becomes the lens through which you view that need: What do I want?

It speaks to how you feel about both those things, in the moment, here, now.

It looks to the future, asks for your ambition, your motivation, of who you want to be and what you want to do.

We can only really see ourselves by looking in the mirror, and this is probably one of the clearest mirrors there are.

To simply ask…

What is enough?

In the money I have.

In the possessions I own.

In the relationships I treasure.

In the ambitions I seek.

In the recognition I deserve.

In the security I seek.

In how much I will give.

In how much I will take.

It is extremely personal, but it is also remarkably collective.

In the families of which we are a part, the organisations we lead and work for, in the communities we belong to.

In the growth we strive for.

In the impact we wish to make.

In the trace we want to leave behind.

It is as revealing as it is difficult because it gets to the heart of things, to what really matters.

It requires reflection, it insists on clarity, it forces trade offs.

It asks us to question what is it we will keep, and what it is we will let go.

It is the foundation from which we build.

I wonder, what happens when you ask…

What is enough?

Interesting classmate. That question begs the follow-up question. Once you know what is enough, and once you have what is enough, what do you do with your life then?

My 'enough' seems to change at different stages of my life. Funny how ?? the enough list ?? gets smaller and smaller with age! Thank you for another powerful post. ??

Asking "What is enough?" is a powerful and revealing question that gets to the heart of what really matters. ??

One of the critical questions I grappled with moving from full time corporate towards coaching Saul. My answer, and that of many I know: less than you think (at least when it comes to the material stuff).
