What Employers Want and How to Show You Have It
To find a job or internship you have to know what employers are looking for, not just the specific requirements for the job but rather what competencies any employer, in any industry, in any company wants you to have. So what are they looking for? A group called NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) developed a list of eight Career Readiness Competencies and sample behaviors:
1.???Career & Self-Development
2.???Communication
3.???Critical Thinking
4.???Equity and Inclusion
5.???Leadership
6.???Professionalism
7.???Teamwork
8.???Technology
How do you show employers that you have one or more of these competencies? Tell a story about a time when you used one or more of these skills. Use the STAR model when telling your story, ST (Situation or Task), A (Action that you took), R (Results of your action).
Start now:
1.???Choose an experience (class project, internship, leadership activity, part-time job) you have had that you can use to talk about one or more of the following skills.
For example, Resident Advisor
2.???Read the definition and the sample behaviors for each competency below.
3.???Think of a story or example of when you have shown one or more of the behaviors related to this competency.
For example, if you choose Communication, one of the sample behaviors of that competency is “Employ active listening, persuasion, and influencing skills”.?You then tell a specific story or example of that skill, such as:
Situation or Task - “When I was a Resident Advisor I had a student who was upset that they could not cook in their room.
Action – “I listened carefully to the student’s concerns and assured them that I understood their frustration with this rule. I explained that the purpose of the rule was to ensure the safety of all the residents and gave them suggestions for alternatives for where to prepare meals.
Result – “After that conversation the student adhered to the rule and was comfortable approaching me with their questions or concerns.”
4.???Use your STAR Stories to show employers you are Career Ready in your online profiles like Handshake and LinkedIn, cover letters, and during your interviews.
