?? Welcome back to Never Job Search Alone! Have you ever frozen when asked "What is your greatest weakness?" in a job interview? This newsletter will put you one step ahead the next time the question comes up.
Q: I'm a bit unsure about how to approach the question about my greatest weakness in an interview. I don't want to sabotage myself based on my response. How can I answer it in a way that’s honest but also leaves a positive impression?
A: We've all been there. You're in an interview, and the employer asks, "What is your greatest weakness?"
You think to yourself, "How do I answer this? What do they actually want to know?" Employers aren't asking you to put yourself down or to focus on your failures -- they're evaluating your ability to reflect, your self-awareness, and your willingness to grow.
Everybody has a weakness, and being able to articulate how you're addressing that struggle can actually showcase your strengths.?
Start by briefly acknowledging a challenge you faced, for example: “I sometimes struggle with distractions.” Then, pivot to the actions you have taken to address the challenge: “However, I’ve developed strategies to manage this, like creating a quiet workspace and using productivity tools to stay on track.”
Avoid using examples that are integral to the job, such as being an accountant who has poor attention to detail or a litigation associate who struggles with public speaking.
Remember, if you’re in the interview, the employer already sees potential in you -- this is your chance to prove them right!
