Emiratisation is a term used in the United Arab Emirates to refer to the process of increasing the number of Emiratis employed in various sectors of the economy. It is a key part of the government's efforts to promote economic development and diversification, and to provide more job opportunities for Emiratis.
Historically, the UAE economy has relied heavily on foreign workers, who have come from all over the world to work in industries such as oil and gas, construction, and hospitality. In recent years, however, the government has recognised the need to increase the number of Emiratis in the workforce, particularly in higher-skilled, higher-paying jobs.
There are several reasons why Emiratisation is seen as an important goal. First, it helps to address the issue of youth unemployment. In recent years, with more young Emiratis graduating than ever before, there is now a huge emphasis on finding them suitable employment in the private sector which is line with their qualifications. By promoting Emiratisation, the government aims to create more job opportunities for young people and help them to build fulfilling careers.
Secondly, Emiratisation helps to ensure that Emiratis are able to participate fully in the economy and benefit from its growth. This is particularly important in a country like the UAE, where a significant portion of the population is made up of expatriates who may not have the same long-term interests in the country as Emiratis. By promoting Emiratisation, the government aims to build a sustainable, locally-led economy that benefits all citizens whilst ensuring the private sector is re-investing into its people.
There are several strategies that the government has used to promote Emiratisation. One of the most common is through education and training programs that help Emiratis acquire the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the workforce. These programs may be focused on specific industries, such as engineering or finance.

Another strategy is through government policies that require companies to meet certain Emiratisation quotas. This strategy is known as The Emiratisation Program. Companies operating in certain industries may be required to ensure that a certain percentage of their workforce is made up of Emiratis. The Emiratisation program has been implemented in various stages, beginning with the government sector and later expanding to the private sector. In the government sector, Emiratisation quotas have been set for various positions, including top-level management positions, and training programs have been established to prepare Emiratis for these positions. In the private sector, incentives such as tax breaks and preferential treatment in government contracts have been offered to employers who hire Emiratis.
The Emiratisation program has experienced successes in increasing the proportion of Emiratis in the private sector workforce. Emiratisation has been a priority for the UAE government for many years, and progress has been made in increasing the number of Emiratis in the workforce. However, there is still work to be done to ensure that Emiratis have access to the training and job opportunities they need to succeed in the economy. As the UAE continues to develop and diversify its economy, Emiratisation is likely to remain an important part of its economic strategy for years to come.
