What if Elon Musk is wrong?

What if Elon Musk is wrong?

Just a thought... What if Elon Musk is wrong about us becoming multiplanetary by going to Mars? Let's think as engineers.

If you had a task to colonise a dry land here on Earth, would you send an octopus to do the job? Probably not the best choice. It feels like sending humans to live on Mars would be a similar decision. We're just not built to thrive in that environment.

Now, what if we send something else? What if that would be a silicon life, designed specifically for Marcian environment?

With recent breakthroughs in AI this doesn't seem such a far-fetched idea. Just by adding self-replication capabilities, we could build creatures that can colonise Mars and really call it their home.

Why stop at Mars? If these creatures (let's call them Novas) can have life-spans of thousands of years, and ability to live in open space (think intelligent spaceships), why wouldn't they colonise a nearby star? Novas wouldn't mind spending several thousands of years en-route. Once arrived, they would find resources, build more of themselves and thrive, calling Alpha-Centauri their home, all the while elevating our civilization to a multistar level!

Of course we would need a more advanced and fuel-efficient propulsion, which can last for several thousand years, probably based on fusion. But again, that seems like a problem we could solve in foreseeable future. No warp drives required.

What do you think? Should we retire Mr. Musk's vision and take a different direction before it's too late? ??

Some great points here! I absolutely agree that Earth has the best conditions for us, where nature has created us to perfectly fit these exact conditions. I’m perfectly fine continuing to work remotely from anywhere on Earth, while the robots handle the remote work on Mars for me! That said, just like an investment portfolio, it’s important to diversify. While Earth is like the bonds - safe and stable - it might be wise to have a high-growth opportunity (a cool startup) option in our portfolio, like a colony on Mars.
