What is EigenLayer?

EigenLayer enhances Ethereum's Proof-of-Stake system by allowing users to 'restake' their ETH. This means that the L2 protocols can rent the security of ethereum by integrating the EigenLayer.

In this way, L2s can avoid the huge cost and complexity of running their own validator set.

The Three Dimensions of Programmable Trust:

The EigenLayer offers three fundamental trust assumptions for developers, accessible by paying a nominal fee to construct their base distributed systems:

  • Decentralized Trust: Developers can borrow trust from decentralized and isolated network operators.
  • Economic Trust: Trust is lent by individual stakers, who commit financial stake to the system.
  • Ethereum Inclusion Trust: Trust is established in the fair inclusion of L2s blocks as per Ethereum consensus rules.

The Restaking Framework:

In EigenLayer, restakers extend their validation scope to include oracle networks and other distributed system applications. They pledge their staked ETH or liquid staking tokens (LSTs) and receive rewards for their commitment, enabling Actively Validated Services like EigenDA.

EigenLayer improves Ethereum's latency by leveraging stakers' contributions, achieving superfast finality chains.

EigenLayer implements stringent slashing conditions to safeguard network integrity.

  • Optimistic Claims: High-value staked claims are treated as correct but can be slashed if proven wrong.
  • Arbitrary Slashing: On EigenLayer, any slashable violation (such as double signing) can be penalized, and thus EigenLayer can be used to extend functionality beyond state execution.

  • Provider of Sovereignty: EigenLayer grants sovereignty to protocols by allowing them to define their own rules, reducing reliance on Ethereum and promoting innovation.
  • Support Trust in Other Protocols: EigenLayer addresses security risks associated with cross-chain dependencies, ensuring trust in protocols built on chains other than Ethereum.
  • Liquidity Fragmentation: EigenLayer solves liquidity fragmentation by utilizing staking tokens and leveraging the security of already-stacked tokens, enhancing the efficiency of the decentralized system.
  • Revenue for Stakers: Stakers earn additional rewards with EigenLayer by securing multiple networks, without needing to increase token stakes.

EigenLayer and the concept of restaking introduce an innovative approach to boosting the security and efficiency of blockchain networks.

By enabling staked assets to secure additional layers or applications, it creates new opportunities for decentralized application development and service provision.
