What is the Edinburgh University Students' Association's Breakfast Club?

Introduction

In this King's Buildings Sentinel article, we explore the Edinburgh University Students' Association's Breakfast Club programme and its future plans.

What is EUSA's Breakfast Club?

Breakfast Club is a programme run by the Edinburgh University Students' Association which provides free breakfast to students every Friday from 8 to 10 AM at the Student Community Lounge in Potterrow. Breakfast includes bread and jam, fruits, juices, tea and coffee. Registration is needed so that the Students' Association can assess student demand for both the sessions and the programme.

Its History

It started with Isi Williams , VP Community 2022-2023, when she began with a trial run of 3 sessions in December 2022 and ended up feeding over 600 students. Because of that trial was successful, she decided to continue running the programme for Spring 2023.

Breakfast Club continued with Alma Kalina Rie?ler — VP Community 2023-2024, and Katie Hardwick — VP Activities and Services 2023-2024, from November 2023 to at least March 2024.

In current academic year of 2024-2025, we have John Rappa , the incumbent VP Activities and Services, who restarted the programme. I was fortunate enough to encounter John on Friday, 11 October 2024 in the Nucleus Building where they were reaching out to King's Buildings students about Breakfast Club and told me about plans to roll out the programme to other campuses including King's Buildings, Lauriston, and Easter Bush with financial support from the university, citing student demand.

Why Do We Need the Breakfast Club?

Breakfast Club was intended for students who are struggling to afford food due to rising cost of living. Today, the Students' Association welcomes any student to come to the Breakfast Club — stating additional benefits such as meeting new people and supporting your Association.

When Do We See the Breakfast Club at King's Buildings?

As of writing this article, no current Elected Student Representatives are interested in this venture. On the other hand, you have independent student leaders, such as Bintang D. , who are collaborating with John on an eventual expansion to King's Buildings no later than March 2025 — assuming we obtain funding from the College of Science and Engineering, The University of Edinburgh through either the Cross-College Fund or the Nucleus Events Fund.

Closing Statement

This article was suggested by John Rappa when I met them on 11 October 2024 at the Nucleus Building — doing some outreach work for the Breakfast Club programme.
