Durva Grass is a three-bladed plant known to attract immense energy of Ganpati. According to mythology, once while fighting a demon, Ganesha ended up swallowing him. This gave him a strong burning sensation in his stomach. When all else failed to provide relief, a group of sages offered 21 blades of the Durva Grass. Durva should always be offered in pairs on the head of the Lord. Never keep Durva on his feet. Make a knot by joining two durva and take about 21 such durva and make 11 pairs of it by making a knot.
Durva is a type of grass consisting of blades in odd numbers. This kind of grass has a cooling effect on the body and is said to have healing properties. Furthermore, it is believed that the Durva has the powers to draw Lord Ganesha's energies as blessings. Pluck a blade of grass and it sprouts back, and this attribute makes it a powerful symbol of regeneration, renewal, rebirth, fertility, and hence prosperity. That is why the durva grass is offered to householder gods like Ganesha, and not to hermit gods like Shiva.
Hinduism believes in one Supreme God or reality from which everything originates, having infinite power, manifestations and qualities and expressing itself through different subordinate power centres, like, Goddess of knowledge is Saraswsthi, God of rain is Indra etc. Ganeshs is the God of success. He is the first God to be worshipped in all Hindu rites and rituals.
This is also very dear to Mahadev. According to the Puranas, Durva is said to have 'amrit' (elixir of immortality). It is said that those who offer Durva grass to the Shivling are blessed with a boon of long life. In case you're unable to fins 'bel patra' on Shivratri, Peepal leaves can be used as a replacement.
Durva grass has several medicinal uses for its numerous health benefits, such as: Treats acidity, boost immunity, controls sugar, cures Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and solves menstrual problems, cures constipation, treats obesity, cures bleeding of gums, cures eye infection and stops nose bleeding. Durva grass grows long and has a single root above the surface, with 3 to 4 nodes that sprout leaves. If pulled out, the plant sprouts back really fast which shows the power of regeneration, renewal, and rebirth.

Tulsi is not offered to Ganesha because they (both Ganeshji and Tulsi) are involved in a mutual curse. Tulsi is the daughter of Dharmaraja (God of righteousness). In her youthful days she was a great devotee of Sriman Narayana (Lord Vishnu). The entire body of the Shri Ganapati Idol, excluding the face, should be covered with durva. Thus, the fragrance of durva will spread around the Idol. Since the Idol is covered with durva, this fragrance assumes the form of the Ganapati Idol and facilitates attraction of pavitraks of Shri Ganapati to this form.
Is kusha and durva same? The grass is believed to have a purifying effect on participants. Grass is also used as an offering in Ganesha temples. Use of durva grass in Hindu rituals began in Vedic times, more than an estimated 3,500 years ago. The grass is variously known as kusha and durva.
Hindu Gods are Devine entities, not creatures in flesh and blood. They are worshipped through imagination and faith. They are made alive through Hindu method of worship to bestow the sought blessings. According Bhagvadgeeta, worship of one supreme God without any material desire is the best form of worship but worship of subordinate Gods is an indirect method of worship of the supreme God.
Worship of different Gods in Hinduism is more to do with the age old religious culture which prepares the spiritual base of a Hindu and inculcates good conduct and brotherhood in society. It inculcates respect of all faiths and religious cultures. With this broad spiritual base, a serious Hindu can start his spiritual journey for his liberation under the guidance of a spiritual master or on his own effort. His real spiritual journey starts from there. Jay Shri Ganesh Ji Ki
